JD's designation of bolt grades??

Anyone know what Material Grade A17D means in the spec's for JD bolts? I'm trying to get some correct strength shear bolts(19H1901) for the needle lift on my JD 347 sq baler without standing in line at the local JD parts counter. My baler isn't close to home to look at.
I know bolts(cap screws) with no radial dashes on head are #3,3 radial dashes on head is #5 and 6 radial dashes on head is #8
Thanks for any help,Jim

I Googled Deere Material Grade A17D and saw a lot of similar questions. Everyone seemed to think that this was Deere's propriatary grading system, and that A17D was equivalent to grade 5

Just my opinion, but isn't a grade 5 bolt incorrect for use as a shear bolt? Seems like you would want a grade 2?

Depends on the application. My Hay King pasture renovator uses 1/2" grade 5 shear bolts. Like you, I thought that was too hard for a shear bolt, but since that's what they call for, that is what I got. I quickly learned that they were just right. I consider myself doing good if I shear less than one per hour.

Jim, I thought the body of the bolt was unique so that a standard bolt could not be used.

I personally would not take the chance.

Thank you. Where on JD's website is this info found?? This info may dispel the myth that JD engineers think a bolt of more than grade #3 shear bolt will be just fine. Thanks again,Jim

Jim, you are right about the 19H bolt being a regular bolt. Any John Deere bolt with that prefix is a common bolt. Mike

Jim, If you look up by part specifications on the Deere website looking at bolts one of the columns is material grade. Click on the grade and the list pops up. When looking at other parts like bushings or washers there will be a lot more materials listed, some can be deciphered and some not so much. I use the part spec search for a lot of odds and ends parts for all brands. It can be a lot easier than trying to find something by calling on the phone.

Thanks, after standing behind a JD dealers parts counter for many hrs in part of my 21 yr employment some things about the parts one never forgets. I still remember a lot of part numbers that were the fast moving items such as sq hay baler tying parts.

(quoted from post at 07:21:12 05/03/12) The older balers were don't know about newer... like a 3/8 bolt that reduced to 5/16 on threads..

Thanks but I wasn't asking about a BP14125 flywheel shear pin but a 19H1901 plain-Jane cap screw(needle lift shear pin) that the shank and outside of threads are ultimately the same diameter.
