I am looking at a 2004 ford f150 with the 4.6L in it. I was wondering what kind of real world fuel mileage it got. I have owned a 99 Chevy which got around 16 mpg and currently own a 02 dodge which gets around 13mpg. I am trying to see if it is worth looking at because i want better fuel mileage than the dodge.

I had one with a 5.4L, and got in that range. I would try for the 5.4 over the 4.6L, it is a much peppier engine.

For whats worth...my 05 crew cab 4wd with a 5.4 and 3.55 gears gets 17 on a very good day. Tonneau cover. Thats a flat 22 mile commute. I would recommend the 5.4l.

We have an 05 with the 2V 4.6 2wd work truck (long bed single cab) and I got a combined (hand-calculated) 19 and change on a highway trip to pick up 2 18.4x34 duals (loaded on the way back in the bed). I went 65-75 while on the interstate. It has the stock tires and a 3.55 rearend. It is a 2wd truck as well. My Dad has an 03 with a 2v 5.4 in a supercrew 4x4 and in all honesty, the 4.6 in the reg cab longbed 2wd 05 feels just as peppy if not peppier, but it's also probably a good 1000 lbs lighter... My Dad's 2v 5.4 SCrew 4x4 gets 15-17 on the highway going 70-75.

I have a 2005 F150 long box work truck with a 4.6 and 4X4. When i'm back home and not all aggresive interstate travel i can get 17 around town. and have only ever gotten like 18 on a interstate with the cruise set at 70. It's not as fast as a 5.4, but does the job just fine.

I have one, super cab with a folding bed cover.
on the road with AC and doing speed limits(or more)
it gets right at 20 all the time. Around town I don't know but it is good. Power is OK. We have lots of long steep hills.

bradinpa, My old 97 Ford F150, Supercab, 4X4, long bed, 4.6 V8, auto, 3.55 gears. Before they went to this Ethanol blended gas junk it got 15/16mpg all day long! Now it gets 13/14mpg on the blended junk. The old girl has 336,000K on her now. My son runs her and her only job now is to stay under him!
My wife's 04 Expedition has a 5.4 V8, auto, 4x4, 3.55 rear gears. It got 17 mpg on reg undiluted gas. On the blended stuff 14/15 regularly. OBTW it has 227,000K miles now!
Neither of these rigs are chipped or any intake or exhaust work done.
Just for info sake my work car is a 2011 Ford Edge. 3.5 V6, 6 speed auto Std axle, 21/22mpg on blended gas all day long for me. My miles run from 150 to 300/ day! got it Jan 5, had 18500k miles on it, today it has a touch over 34400 on it!
All 3 accounts are real world #s !!!
Hope this helps.

01 F-150 super cab long bed 2wd/4.6/auto/3.55 best tank 22.??, beating back & forth to work on 20 mile trips about 16. Normal road trips upper teens 16-18. Short trips and in town 13-15.

If your driving a truck of any kind the mileage is going to be in the 15 to 19 range unless it is a 2wd although dodges seem to be worse.

I agree somewhat with James. I have a 03 2wd with the 4.6. It got 19.+ until they made the alkyshut mandatory. then it dropped to 17.+.
Its got 226,000 on it and is a daily driver still gets around 17 if I'm driving it with the teenager driving, it don't do so good.
