Priming an Engine

We have an Oliver 77 engine that I would like to prime while on the Engine Stand. The engine oil pump is gear driven off the cam. So I can't just spin the oil pump as you would on say a chevrolet Engine. I would like to some how use an external pump and prime the system. I'm not sure what to use air, electric, some small belt driven pump. I found a setup online that would do it but I thought it was a bit pricey. Let me know what you guys think or a set up that might work. Thanks
Pressurized Tank

I have a prelube tank I made out of a 4" pipe about 12" long, capped on each end with a 1/4 turn valve and long grease gun hose on the bottom and an air fitting with a gauge on the top. I screw the hose into the oil galley of the engine, usually where the oil pressure gauge fitting is at. It does put oil into the engine for sure, but I don't know if the oil actually goes everywhere in the engine or just back down through the oil pump. Don't know if it actually does any good or if it just makes me feel good. Jim

You could take the plugs out and roll it over too. You'd at least not have compression pressure on the bearings. Dad made a setup out of a small portable air tank to pressurize an engine he built. Just need to find an oil port that will force oil through the entire engine.

If you can locate a Wagner brake bleeder it will do the job. We had a pressure vessel at work and we prelube the engine until we had oil pressure on the gauge. Some of these engines were 895cid and 1790cid used by the military. I rebuilt a 1985 Chevy Citation engine in 1997 after having the engine bored oversize. It had an idler gear between the cam gear and the distributor and I removed the idler gear and used a drill motor to spin the new oil pump. I used a piece of round stock and filed a slot to drive the pump. Had instant oil pressure when I started the engine. Hal
PS: A ring had broken then scored the cylinder.

Christopher, i always crank it with the plugs out till it builds pressure then fire it up. as long as you cleaned all the oil galleries good , put all the plugs back in and put the main bearings in with the oil holes facing the block,(most main sets have oil holes in both halves) everything should be fine. chuck

I use a setup very similar to that that I made from an empty freon tank. Connect to oil galley and push in up to 2 gal. of oil. Does a good job lubing engine and filling filter and pump( some engines may not allow backflow to pump).

Hello Chrisopher S,
Old style freon tank would work real well.
You can buy an air kit so you can fill and take out from the same hose.
You can also make your own air fitting on the side od the tank.
You would need only 20 to 30 pounds pressure to get the oil in the engine. You should stop though before you run out of oil, or else you would put air in the system.
Turning the engine by hand a couple of turns while you do that will distribute oil throught the engine, and then you can start it prelubed.
Guido.

I just use a good assembly lube. Watch for oil pressure at start-up. If an engine sits all winter it doesn't need priming, does it?

Go to your local O'Reilly Auto Parts store and rent one of their engine prelube tanks. When I bought a complete engine from them once, they made me rent one in order to activate the warranty. The way it works is you buy it, use it, return it un broken and they refund your money. I lost the receipt so I never was able to take it back.
