big $ train

the other day I was waiting at a RR crossing. THere were car after car of new JD combines. I would guess about 1/3-1/2 way I started to count them. I counted 29. This included some or what looked like combines with no tin/cab/engine. I presume those were for export of some sort??

After the JD's the back of the train was loaded with about 25 to 35 new CNH combines both Red and Yellow but more red.

ALot of $ on that train a derailment would be huge which there was one along that area about 1-2 miles west that spilled some molten sulfur just a couple weeks ago.

Our less than smart Governor is allowing Ankenys' largest employer, John Deere, to ship their Cotton Pickers and Sprayers by way of TMC. These would be FAR less costlier being shipped by Railroad. But TMC has given him a lot of campaign money for re-election.

Whats the governor got to do with it as far as shipment method??

Those sprayers are way wide. Will they even fit on a rail car.

Other factories quit rail years ago because they provided such poor service. All they wanted to haul was coal and grain.

TMC= Too Much Chrome, Too Much Cr*p, etc. It's a trucking company out of Des Moines, IA that runs flatbeds and stepdecks. I've heard lots of things about how they treat their drivers and the rules they must abide by. They do haul a lot of Deere equipment.

Funny you say all they want to haul is coal and corn. Here in the coal fields of Eastern Ky and South Western West Virginia, all we hear is that the RR(CSX and Norfolk Southern) doesn't want to haul coal. They seem to never want to add any new mine load outs.

I worked at jd des Moines for 33 years, yes they ship a lot by truck. But as far as I know they ship a lot of cotton pickers by rail.

Probably cheaper to haul assembled on a truck with an oversize load sign than to knock it down to a size narrow enough to fit a rail car. Jim

I've seen alot of tractors heading east over the last 5 years or so too. of course several major lines run thru nothern Indiana. blue, red and green

We had a driver quit and go to work for them. He said that he spent all weekend polishing the chrome and aluminium on the rig,on Monday he had to stop by the home shop and they told him he could not leave till he cleaned and polished the truck. He was back driving for us on Wednesday.

I used to own and run a stepdeck tractor trailer from 1993 til 2000, carried a lot of farm equipment. Also hauled SUV frames from Reading PA. to Michigan, they would load rail cars with the frames to save money, but they would take a week to deliver them. The trucks would deliver them overnight when the trains were running late.
