The module that bombardier calls a amplipher module or what I take to be an electronic ignition module went out on my quad. $525 seems a bit ridiculious. After market yeilded no cheaper results. I can't understand why that little box is worth that kind of money.

The reason you can't understand is because all you see is a plastic box. You have no knowledge of what's inside that box, or the amount of engineering that went into designing that box, or the tools/equipment necessary to build that box, or the amount of labor it took to build that box, or the cost to ship that box from the factory to the distributor to the dealer...

Everybody that touches the box needs to make money on it; anybody handling that box for nothing is a fool.

Both replies so far have merit. That said, having seen the kinds of stuff I've seen working on equipment all of my life, I can say in my experience that wisbaker pretty much has a lock on the main reasoning behind on the whole parts price game........Make parts expensive enough that the person throws out the old and buys new....which has even more expensive electronic parts on it......

Is that also the reason you can buy a China made multifunction calculator for a couple of bucks at most any Dollar General? TDF

The reason a simple calculator is so cheap is that the design cost was payed for thirty years ago. My Dad bought a simple calculator in the early 1970s. He gave $200-300 for it. Now you can by one for less than a Dollar.

Reasons his ignition module is so high:
1) Captive supply chain.
2) It is a complicated electronic piece of hardware. I bet it would be a lot cheaper if it did not have to a dozen safety circuits made into it.
3) Low production numbers. I bet that a few thousand a year would catch all of them made.

You are finding out one reason that Bombardier/CAN AM bikes and four wheelers are not as popular. The parts for a Honda or Kawasaki are much cheaper. Plus there are many more units sold/produced so there are after market parts for many of the common stuff.

Good friend and local dealer started selling Bombardier 5-6 years ago. I was in the market so I thought that I would try to keep the money local. I bought a mid range four wheeler. Not the cheapest nor the highest one he sold. I kept it one year. He had it in his shop more than I had it home. The biggest lemon I ever owned.

HE sold 50-70 a year the first few years. Now he may sell 20-30. He does not even advertise them any more. He told me if he could get the parts to service the ones he had already sold he would dump the whole line. He said that they have cost him way more business than he will ever make off of them. The bad four wheelers make people mad and they quit buying the other stuff he has.

I sold it with less than 100 miles on it. I lost 2K on the deal. I bought a Honda and it is four years old and never had had any thing done other than change the oil and filter.
