im trying to help out a kid at work, he's just 20, and starting out in life, his ride is a '89 ford shortbed 2wd, it had what i think is the mazda 5 speed tranny in it behind a 300 six, he cooked the tranny when he ran it out of fluid, being a 300 i know they used this engine clear back in the 60's is there any other cheaper tranny that will fit in the truck? he just needs basic transportation, and dont have much money

I had an F150, 1978 model, 300 cu in 6cyl, 4 on
the floor...there must be thousands on them in
junkyards..mine was a cast iron made in USA
model..probably Dana/Spicer..bullet proof!

Any of the trannies that bolted up to the 6 can be used to include the auto's which may short term be the cheapest route. For example the Ford AOD will bolt up but you must have the correct torque converter for it. Plus you have to put in a tranny cooler. The Aod will bolt up to the small block 351 and 302. Those engines are externally balanced while the 300 is internally balanced.

The older cask iron case 4 speed will work to, bell housing will again bolt up the the small block V8's and the 300. It may take a different slave cyl for the clutch as somewhere in there Ford went from the bell housing mounted cyl to the internal one. I think in 87 or 88.

A friend has his 3 spped manaul on a 76 got out on him last year and it now has a M5OD in it.

you should be able to find a 3 speed taht will fit. Most any other trans will require a bell housing change, his current is probably made on the trans.

I think it would turn into one heck of a project putting a 4-speed in that 1989. The hydraulic clutch vs manual linkage for one.

I would either look for a 5-speed from a 1988-1994 2WD truck (F-150, F-250, Bronco), or maybe put in an automatic and just put a derby car shifter on the floor for it :)

problem youre gonna have is the '80 [iirc] and later have hydraulic clutches...used 5 speed from junkyard shouldnt be that much.

thats not really too hard a find but do you know how much work that would be to convert to auto. any 87-91 mazda 5spd will work from those yrs. i wouldnt even bother to try and find differnet trany besides an original. go to fordtrucks.com and ask the guys on there. lots of people to help there also.

Hello ericlb,
89 was either the first or the second year with a 5 speed.87 was a 4 speed with 4th beeing overdrive.Should be plenty out there in the salvage yeards.
Guido.

eric, I"m in NY and have, IIRC, a four speed that went behind a 300. Certainly could be had, if you"re close enough to make it work.

Jake

I had a '91 F150 with a 300 six and 5 speed tranny. Never a problem in 200,000 miles. Bet theres tons of them in junkyards, not that hard to change it out. Might consider looking into the clutch if its got as lot of miles on it. Old six was bulletproof, best engine Ford ever made.

With that 5 speed you need to be close on application and year to fit. Any other swap you will need the doner truck. Because driveshaft etc. may need changed. GOOD LUCK

he's looking but not much here ,stuff is either too new and high dollar, or its worse than what he's got now, the old truck is decent so i figured if we can just swap in a tranny and put it back on the road it will be the least expensive way out

im out in nm , i appreciat ethe offer but it would be quite a trip to ny from here about 3500 miles

i think were going to have to hit the junk yards in person around here, calling isnt getting us anywhere, i know where a plain old ford 4 speed is from the 70's but im not sure if its doable, even if i take the bellhousing too, due to the hydraulic clutch, vs the old mechanicle style, going back to the mechanicle clutch linkage looks like a fine can of worms, and one beter left unopened lol just not sure if the 300 engine retained the same bellhousing patern thru the years, and nobody in the local salvage yards seems to know either used to be they could look up what stuff fit what,

Any ford from the `80s with a 4 speed from behind a 300, 302, or 351w will fit, with a hydraulic clutch. Easiest would be to find another 5 speed to bolt in, they are not bad trannys, just don`t run them out of fluid.
