blue heeler

Anyone out there have a blue heeler ? Just brought two puppies home. Lost our dalmation last month and seemed like time for a pup. Its amazing the roll dogs can play in our lives and our family.

In-laws have an older one on the ranch and are now bringing a 2nd one along while there is a teacher, good cattle dog.

We have a blue heeler that's about 10 yrs old. Never got to work any cows with her but she dang sure don't allow no cats in the yard!! And she'll ride herd over the grandkids to make sure they don't wander too far away.

(quoted from post at 07:53:08 04/24/12) We have a blue heeler that's about 10 yrs old. Never got to work any cows with her but she dang sure don't allow no cats in the yard!! And she'll ride herd over the grandkids to make sure they don't wander too far away.

Good dogs that need a job to do, our they will invent one, like, do you the favor of pulling the carpet up so it's easier to replace. The Heeler moniker is because they will nip the heels of anything that won't follow directions well. It's just a friendly nip that means move along 'for I get serious.

They are territorial, and have a pack mentality. So if there are children or inlaws with children, make sure the puppies grow up with their scent, so that they belong in the pack. There must also be a pecking order established in the pack, early on or they will establish one for you. Probably not to your liking. They will from time to time challange the pecking order to make sure they aren't being left behind. And your still fit to be the pack leader. They love to rough house and will sound like Cujo is attacking, all the while the tail is furiously wagging, in anticipation.

They are super dogs for people that understand they are a working breed. Bred to stare down a 3000# steer, that don't want to. You will be hard pressed to find another breed that is as loyal and protective of the pack and territory. Forget this and you could regret it. Outsiders are not welcome, and will be warned shortly before being shown that the bared teeth meant stay away.

Once they get some age (7yrs or so) they calm down a bit, and quit tearing things up or digging holes in the yard. Remember, if you don't give them a job, they will invent one! They are not subdivision material.

We have the American version of the breed (Catahoula Leopard), and I did extensive reasearch on both. I'd have another in a minute. If you like to pig hunt with your hands, the Cat is your friend.

Good luck

we've had blues and reds. haven't had one for two years. ma and the kids want a new puppy but just can't find any reds around our area. found 3 litters of blues the last few months. ours were great dogs.

My wife use to raise Pomeranians we had 7 at one time & had to feed them separately. We also have had 3 Keeshonds in the last 35 years. In 2000 we bought a Chow and she was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and had to put her to sleep. When we received the news on her we bought another Chow pup. She will be two in May. Here she is at 8 weeks. Hal

We had one, great dog one of the best we've had. The cows got out on the road one night and there he was to get them back, they made it but he didn't.

They are ankle biters and sometimes nip visitorss on the feet as they enter thier vehicle. Most are short haired and part Dingo. We had a 1/2 blue healer crossed with 1/4 shepard and 1/4 border collie. Best dog we ever had on the farm. Years later the neighbors still mention and miss her. She kept the ground hogs thinned out in a 1/2 mile radius as well as herding cattle. Killed. Countless coons and rats too.

I have a border collie / blue heerler mix and he's about the best d*mned dog I've ever owned. He's one sheep herding machine and he's got kind of a "YIPE! YIPE! YIPE!" bark so it's not hard to tell when someone is coming up to the house. He's great with kids too.

Ours gets along with the cats that belong around our place just fine. If a stray cat shows up that can be a different deal all together.

Skip, Best Dog there is Period! I have only had Blues! I just had to put my last one down in between Christmas and New Years. Pepper was about 15 yrs old He could finish your sentences for you!, When they old they get Codgety (don't like a lot of going on, noise) the cats will torque him of more than when he was younger.
This last one is #3 since 1984 all three have made 14+YRS
With some training they will get along with cats not all hate cats thought many do. I Suspect that comes from the Dingo in their lineage!
My first Heeler (Doc) Was probably hauled in the neighborhood of 150000 K miles in his lifetime all that in the back of my pickup.
I would pull through the Dairy Queen and order a Ice cream cone for Doc and have the girl pitch it into the back of the Pickup! Most any time I was in Town! I will never own another kind of dog!
Keep them on a string for the first yr and thy will never leave your side
Later,
John A.

i have one that we got as a rescue dog about 12 years ago. He"s old and scared up from working cows but he still my best buddy!

best damn dog's period. squeak was a rescue dog. as stated earlier; she can finish your sentence. never had one before but a buddy got one and 'mickey' sold me on the idea of adopting a blue heeler. mickey is 17yrs old now and sueak is about 11.

always heard that Blue Heelers were good hunting dogs. I had a friend when I was younger that had two of them for hunting and they were great dogs. I on the other hand, have a Cocker Spaniel. He has been the best dog I"ve ever had. Great personality,..good with kids,.never leaves the yard or chases after critters. Good watch dog and very loyal. They can be high maintenance,..especially now since he is almost 14 yr.old. But all in all he is a great dog and loyal companion,..like the others say,..they become family. It will be hard to put him down when the time comes,..but I"ll never let him suffer.Enjoy the time you have with them for it can be short.

Like the others have said, best dog there is. I got Kiya a year ago, and she would follow me to the gates of hell and back, never had a dog as smart and loyal as she is.
