Guys a couple of questions?
1. Ford 4610...SU What does the SU stand for?

2. MFWD and FWD ...Four Wheel Drive for the latter But MFWD?

Thanks

The "SU" means "Special Utility"...these SU's have a swept back front axle kinda/sorta like all the smaller Fords. This made the tractor wheelbase a little shorter and thus a bit easier to get around in tight places. I have a 4610 "All Purpose" and it has a straight front axle. My old (1963) 4000 Ford has a swept back axle. It didn't take long to get used to the 4610 AP and it carries a loader 90 % of the time.

MFWD...I "think" means Mechanical Front Wheel Drive.

Hope this helps.

Rick

Due to copyright laws, it is illegal to use the term "FWD". This is a wholly owned name belonging to the FWD Corporation of Clintonville, Wis. And yes, it stands for Four Wheel Drive, which was the name of the company prior to 1958. "FWD" has always been the logo applied to their trucks. Usually to the sides of the hood but elsewhere as well. They're so busy building Seagraves fire engines that they rarely, if ever, build a plain old truck anymore.

The SU models had the classic, wishbone front ends that Ford used all the way back to 1939.
The rear tires were smaller and the whole tractor sat much lower.

Compare the SU in the First photo to the standard ag model in the second photo.
These are 4600s but I couldn't find any 4610s on google images. Basically the same tractors though except for the tin.

FWD, MFWD, FWA (assist). All means the same to me. The tractor has 4 wheel drive.

I guess until both axles have a locker in them do you really have true 4wd, probably not.

I had a Ford 231 industrial which is a 2600 equiv. With the swept back axle it would trully turn on a dime. Which is what you see in Ultradogs photos. And they are lower to the ground. Down side I don't think you would want a loader on it. Would have to be a little more careful.

(MFWD) mechanical front wheel drive, has a driveshaft to run front 4x4. (FWA) front wheel assist, hydraulic, some only pull foreward, not in reverse.(fwd) is just front wheel drive,or some list it as 4 wheel drive.Ford SU is special utility.

MFWD is Mechanical front-wheel drive. Some manufacturers used a hydraulic-front wheel drive up until the 1980s. Which would still be a four-wheel drive system, but usually not nearly as good as MFWD.

Oliver, at least, and I think several others had lines of tractors that they called "Special"- denoting tractors without many of the features of the regular line, to make them less expensive. So the thing about "specials" was, well, they weren't very special.

The practice persists- I have a 2006 Kubota MX5000 "Utility Special"- its pretty basic- no hydraulic shuttle, no remote hydraulics (although the loader is hooked up with couplers so that you could use the loader hydraulics for implements), no draft sensing for the 3 point. But was lots less money (I got it when it was 2 years old, 420 hours, perfect condition), for about half the money of a new, "regular" model.
