Home DVD Burning

Okay, I picked up a USB Converter from a buddy that you play your old VHS tapes in and it transfers/converts the files digital to your computer (via a USB Cable) so you can burn them to a DVD. I plan to use Nero 10 software to burn DVD's and I want them to be able to pop in to any cheap garden variety (Wally World, Memorex, Emerson etc) DVD player and THEY WORK

QUESTIONS:

Should I burn them as an AVI File (was told by my buddy) or a WMV or MPEG (Think LJD mentioned to once before)

Should I use DVD + R or DVD - R blank disks???

MPEG is the most common DVD format. MPEG2 is the most common of the most common. DVD-R is the most common of the Media formats. Most older DVD players in TV monitored systems use those at least. Newer Computer based players and high end 2010 or newer players can play potato chips on a good day, and will self adjust to 30 formats and compression ratios. Jim

John ,I hope you get some good info on this. I'm sure you will from the people here . I bought a Sony CD burner and It only worked with discs that said CD audio music . If they didn't say music NG. It was sent to Kansas for repair and they called and told me nothing was wrong and sent it back . It is supposed to work with dvd dics and it does not do that either. I hope this becomes an education in dics because I make them for people and some say they played in the house but in the car it says Error. When I was trying to do it on the computer an apprentice told me I was making them in MP3 form and that why they didn't work in the car player. Im not trying to hijack your post but I just wish I could go in any store and buy discs without finding CD audio music or it won't work.Too many different discs.

Needs to be MPEG-2 so any player can play it. You also have to make sure it's burnt to the disk in "closed session" mode.

New versions of software i.e. Nero are dumbed down and probably won't mention anything about "open" or "closed" session. It will probably just say something like "burn disk to work on standard DVD players."

The choice of +R or -R makes absolutely no difference on any DVD player that's not ancient. DVD-DL (double layer) almost the same but some cheap players even made a year ago won't work with double-layer disks. I've burned over 1000 movies in all three formats and have yet to come across a player they wouldn't work in. That being said - the "DL" disks are the newest of the bunch.

If you are recording from factory made VHS tapes - you might run into encryption problems. Many DVD recording programs will not let you burn anything that's encrypted.

If you get stuck with any sort of encryption - do yourself a favor and subscribe to DVD Fab. Amazing program that comes out of China. I bought a lifetime subscription for $50 around 5 years ago. So far, they've sent me over a dozen updates for free.
