Skid steer post auger

I looking for some advice on skid steer post augers. I have standard flow new holland ls170 skidloader and I will be using the auger to mostly drill wood post holes including railroad tie size as that is what I have been using for corner posts. I have borrowed the neighbors Lowe but it is time to het my own as I have a lot of fence to build and he seems to be using his auger when I have the time to make fence. Do you guys have any suggestions on makers and model, planetary or chain? The ability to rent bigger bits once in awhile. I'm in Wisconsin so Lowe augers are available locally.

Thanks in advance

Joe

I have a Rhino built by Belltec? When I bought it, I had the choice of three different sizes based on hydraulic flow. The middle sized model fit my hydrauilic flow/gpm.

Lowe power heads are fine for your application. Just get the correct size for the hydraulic flow output of your skid steer.(that will be listed in the specifications of your machine)
Good luck,
Andy

I think a chain type power head would be fine for your application. If it's just your own use I can't really see you wearing it out. I know chain reduction power heads have worked fine for me.

I"d recomend going with the Harleman Ground Force auger. Its a heavy duty machine that can you can add weights to. It can be used for regular drilling and if you hit rocks slap on the weights and rock bit. My neighbor has one and thats what i"m getting as well. It"ll do everything you could ever want. Another one I have heard about but never seen personally is from Skid Steer Solutions. It is a post hole digger that can convert into a cement mixer. I think it might be handy but id still go with Ground Force.

Ya get what you can afford . We found ours on Craigs list and it was a like new John Deere as who made it for Deere i have no idea and we run it on a New Holland LX665 and it works for us . since then we have added a 4 1/2 inch Bell Tech rock bit and to get that i had to become a non stocking dealer for Bell tech , sorta cut out the middle man so to speak . as there was npobody close that stocked or could ge the bit we wanted and why should i buy the bit from Washingtons state and have it shipped from there to Ohio when i could get it shipped from the factory here for 450 bucks less. They have some fine drive units in the N C series would be a good choice for you. direct drives there is three models to chose from to match you GMP flow and pressure and they come with a two year warranty .. No i am not trying to sell ya one i am just saying that there units empress me . plus this unit has the 2 inch HEX drive that i like better. IF you were a neighbor i would order it for you but i am not going to say hey order it from me and start selling them. Not gong there . just like with the other stuff that i am a dealer for .

I've used a Lowe 1200 with up to a 20" auger and not had any problems. Rarely ran the machine full throttle. When you run into problems is when you have sticky clay and try to drill too much at a time. I've had a 9" auger stuck pretty good a few times but that was usually when drilling over 6' deep. If you keep going up and down in tough clay makes it a lot easier. In easier digging, like for fence posts, you can usually do it in one shot and do a lot of holes in a hurry.
