Sunoco 20w50 engine oil

I have a couple 55 gallon drums of Sunoco 20W50 racing engine oil. It is not diesel oil. I was wondering why this wouldn't work in a diesel or if there is something I could put with it and use it in a diesel? Just wondering what you all would do. I got a good deal on the oil and have several worn out gas engines to use it in if I can't use it in any diesels. Thanks in advance for you comments, Morgan.

I would not use it in any diesel. It may ruin your engine. It"s just not worth taking the chance. Diesel oil has special additives to protect the engine.

Somewhere on the drum their will be an API rating the gas rating will be S_,
(S followed by a letter), the later in the alphabet the letter is the newer
the oil rating is. SA is the old non-detergent oil, SB is something from the
late 50's early 60's. SF was the current grade when I was in college, new
oil is I think SJ. Their may be another rating that will start with a C and
have another letter like CC or CD, these indicates the diesel or
commercial(C) rating for the oil. These are American Petroleum Institute
ratings (API) identifying the oil's performance as a lubricant. Compare the
drum's ratings to what you engine requires. If the oil is equal to or
greater it should be okay.

It may be perfectly ok to use in a diesel engine. Most of teh racing oils are low ash and that is exactly what you need in a diesel. I would check it out on Goggle and see what tehy say about it.

if it is racing oil i would be VERY cautious in using it in my equipment.

It will not have the additives that most oils have since the racing guys change every race or every other race.

It should be good oil to protect against high pressure and high shear situations.

do you have a gear box or transmission that needs something close to that weight oil??

Thanks everyone. I will check out the ratings when I get the oil home. The seller said he didn't think it was for diesels so we will see. I will check on the ratings also to see if it is suitable for use in a regular gas engine. Thanks again for your input, Morgan.

Also soot emissions and sulphuric acid (acid rain and engine degradation from water and the sulphur mixing making sulphuric acid H2SO4) from high sulphur content diesel.
