Black crud in gas tank.

Bought a Farmall H that had been stored for many years with gasoline in the tank. It had turned into a black substance that must be cleaned before it will run properly. The question is, what is the best way to clean the stuff out of the tank? Thanks, Joe

lacquer thinner or acetone will dissolve it...you could try some E85 instead...people keep saying it cleans fuel systems.
easiest way is take tank to a radiator shop and have them boil it out.

If the tank is off the tractor, 2 0r 3 gallons of lacquer thinner, then put in some nuts and bolts and drive around with it in the back of your truck for a couple of weeks. Ellis

Flush with acetone. Rinse with hot pressure washer (don't be bashful) then a good soak with 50% diluted muriatic acid found at your friendly local hardware store.

Before you go out and buy all that expensive, hard to find stuff, try a couple gallons of bio-diesel.

Acid will work, but it will eat the galvanized coating inside the tank too.

Acetone and roofing nails, shake well. Gun wash used in autobody shops is a pretty darn good cleaner too.
