I have a John Deere 2640 and the tractor has 5500 hrs on it and i never had a problem. Until one day the power steering and all hydrolics quit working. I have spent over $8000 on it and i just wanted to know if anyone had any tips or suggestions on what i should do. I have also heard about a recall on these tractors any information on that would be helpful too. Thanks

The operator's manual regular scheduled service includes replacing the dampener on the front hydraulic pump drive. And inspection of the drive splines.
When was the last time the trans oil screen and filter was changed?
Is there a de-stroker on the high pressure hydraulic pump?
1-800-522-7448 if somebody lost the manual.

First off there was not a recall on the JD 2640 tractors. Where there fix-as-fail warranty issues??/ Yes. This tractor is almost thirty years old so any JD warranty is long gone.

Now for your problem. How can you spend $8000 and still not know what is wrong with the tractor??? The original issue could have been something very simple or very bad. Even then it would not have cost $8000 to have it repaired.

Your biggest issue is a crooked dealer/repair shop/person.

I can get a re-manufactured hydraulic pump for under $1500. If I had to split the tractor and replace the charge pump it would not have been more than $2000 more. I could have rebuilt and repair every hydraulic thing on that tractor for less than $8000.

You have been taken advantage of. Get us some details of what repair work has been done to the tractor. Then we can make better suggestions as to what your next step should be.

I just had two parts replaced for the power steering column and the parts were over $1600 for just two of the main parts, no labor. Maybe that was wrong on his as well. I like mine, but it has been the most expensive thing per hour that I use. Yes, my front pump needed rebuilt, again, and some other hyd. valves too. It sure works great now..... I better keep it as I just put another $6000 into it.

What type options does tractor have such as hyd-Hi-Lo,hyd ind pto or frt end loader.???? I agree with JDseller in that whomever supposedly repaired it for $8000 must have not known what they were doing.

There are no parts in the Dubuque/Mannheim JD utility tractor steering that are $800 apiece that I'm aware of. The 2 spool vales are as follows AR81610 BODY STEERING VALVE ASSEMBLY ADD 269.11. These 2 spools and a kit is at the worst all that would be needed if the housing wasn't cracked.

You paid $8000 for the tractor or you paid $8000 in repair bills on the tractor? Your repair shop is either staffed with incompetent parts swappers instead of mechanics that diagnose and troubleshoot. Or the shop is crooked and corrupt.

I had the same thing happen to my 2640. It was only sheared bolts in the link between the front of the engine and the pump. Real easy to fix. Part were around $100.

The housing was FUBAR from the cross pin in the ram coming loose and making a trench. $1100. The inside part was $500+. I'm sure I get charged retail:) Couldn't find a used or rebuilt one and didn't have time to get a machine shop to try to work on it.

Mwhite12: Please email me and I will give you my phone number and you can call me. I can call you too if you want.

IS the person/shop that is doing the work a JD dealer or an independent shop?? The reason I am asking is that if you are not familiar with JDs hydraulic system and don't run pressure/flow/leak checks BEFORE you work on it, you can bolt on parts for a long time and still not get it to work right.

The Hi-LO not working and the remotes not working both are symptoms of low charge pump pressure/flow. This can be cause by an internal leak that could have happened all at once.

Some simple things to check that you should be able to do on your own.
1) Start the tractor and remove the hydraulic oil filler cap. Take a light an see if you can see any hydraulic oil leaking/spraying around in the rear end section. One of the little cameras that are made to look inside of walls works real well to look in a small hole. If you see anything leaking or spraying around then the rock shaft housing need to be removed. The lift control valve orings and packings need replaced. Maybe even the lift piston oring too.

Does the hydraulics work if the lift control arm is pushed all the way down??? This would take the three point system out of the circuit unless the control valves are really leaking bad.

2) Remove the cover that goes between the seat mount and the gear shifts. It has a bolt in each corner. You can slide it up and off with both gear shifts back. Then put the tractor into park. Slide either shift boot up. Remove the snap ring that holds the gear shift into the housing. Put the gear shift up and out of the housing. Start the tractor. Take a light and look down into the shifter hole. You should NOT see any oil spraying around. If you do then there is a leak on the charge pump/PTO lines or system. The tractor will need split at the transmission to repair this.

3) Drain the hydraulic oil and pull the suction screen out and see if there are brake lining chunks in the sump screen. This can cause all kinds of issue too.

I can keep guessing here for a long time. Please give me a call.

I have a JD 2640 with no hydraulic pressure to remotes, and the lift arms will barely work. Steering, brakes, and PTO are fine. Removed gear shifters and saw that oil is spraying. Any ideas on what is cracked?

What type pto,dual-clutch(foot pedal) or hyd with control lever between gear shift levers? Does your tractor have hyd Hi-Lo or reverser? Ir steering, brakes & pto works but rear hyd's don't problem could be a stuck pressure control valve on the lower RH side of trans.
