Does anyone know why Oliver 1650 diesel cross fire injected diesel engine would backfire back through the intake manifold? The engine also has a mis at higher rpms. Any help in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

Does it do it with every stroke, if so, sounds like that cylinders exhaust valve cam lobe is worn off, or the push rod or rocker arm is bad.

Does not do it on every stroke. It only does it once in awhile. Had head off, valves look good, energy cells look good, push rods look good, rocker arms look good, and had the injectors rebuilt. Still back fires but not as often.

Check injection pump timing, while cover and gasket is off pump housing see if any broken flex ring remains are at bottom of opening. If so will need pump resealed to repair retainer ring. If no bits of what looks like coffee grounds are present adjust timing if needed. May also need to check speed advance curve, if late at higher speed will cause erratic misfire too.
