Typical martin houses are "condos" with sides facing four ways. I never had any luck attracting any over a number of years, until house disintegrated. But, then I"m not closely near a lake, or river.

Main thing to consider is a open area. No trees within 30 ft. I Have four houses and two face east and west and two face north and south. All four are ocupied Had to move one away from the trees before they would accept it..

Hummmm! Ive had a Martin house for about 15 years. The first year I put it up it was only a few minutes before a Martin came looking. It has had Martins every year, some time a family or 2 of Sparrows would be there also. THEN 3 years ago No Martins came and haven't saw any since. I haven't did anything different. I take it down every year after Martins leave and clean it, put it up again about 1st Feb.

i see plenty of them flying around in the summer
so i know they are in the area.i have it about
18 ft up and away from trees and along side my garden. there is a power line wire about 40 ft
away for them to perch on. i have had a single
martin sit on the wire and call in the summer
but no other bird comes to join him. after about a month he leaves

speaking of purple martins, there is a lake by me(lake murry) that has one the biggest if not the biggest nesting area on a island out in the middle, you pull your boat up around sunset and they come in by the millions, the sky turns black on a good day!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swallow

I have a family much like the "welcome swallow" haunt me every time I open the garage door, appear from nowhere [so to speak].

I have an enclosed verandah with bathroom beside, they come in those rooms looking for insects, and nesting sites, if I don"t close the doors. They beat me to it last nesting season so I had to make a platform beside the nest so that their droppings would not foul everything.
Seeing they rise before me, I had to leave the louvres ajar. But it is a small price.

Also have one of these Pardalotes, incessant chirpers.
