RE:Salebarn calves

Market prices are all over the place. Some are lowballed like yours and others are out if sight. Guess it just depends upon the demand the buyers see at the barn have.

I remember buying Holstein BC's about a week old for $75 back in '80 and was glad to get them that cheap.

That is cheap but with the beef market down and feed cost high bull calves will be getting cheaper. Also unless you are going to eat them yourself the Jersey calves will not sell for much when fat.

Holstein bull calves are going for $125-175 when a week old around North-East Iowa.

Was at the sale several years ago and my wife's friend was buying Holstien bull calves for $250 that fall she was at the sale with them looking real good weighing 500 LBS brought 50 cents a pound, she decided not to do that again.

Fat Jersey calf, Baw-ha-ha-ha, you ki11 me.....

I use to buy them for $10 a head, 3 days old. Raised for myself. Liked the meat (lean) but the yellow fat was less than desired. Quit when holstiens prices drove Jerseys up to $100 a head. There for a while if it was any color but tan, it was $300 when it hit the ground. No idea whats going on now, got out of the cow biz when a fell'a south of here could sell it cut up and wrapped for less than what it cost me to feed it.

Never bought real young calves to raise. My experience with calves that the mother died or wouldn't take the calf convinced me that it's a losing proposition. The cost of milk replacer istoo high, then you have to buy calf starter and grower which is high. If a calf can't live and grow on grass and hay I'm not interested.

I was at an auction just yesterday here in Indiana.Bought 2 240# holstein steers for 80 cents a pound. Got 3 more that weighed 197# for $1 a pound.Prices were all over the place. Seen 1340# steers bring $1.05 a pound. Most beef calves were $1.20 # and up. Good holstien bucket calves weighing 90 to 100 pounds were bringing $2 a pond and more. Unreal!!! Why pay that much for a 3 day old baby when you could buy a started calf for less?? Feeder pigs were out of sight too.Seen 15 45# pigs bring $95 head! 25 pigs at 50# sold for $110 each. Doest make sense!! LOL Doug

Friend of mine works at the local dairy, his also. She babysits the new calves until they are enough to eat hay then they are sold or replace old cows. The dairy says that they do better an loose less calves that way.

You will get the money back when they grow. What if your Mother had the same attitude.? Someone has to look after the young. It had no say in the event.
