Ya ya, I know, but I am serious when I said I am changing the herd. So, read on. Looking real serious at one,1980 I beleive, 600 hours on complete engine rebuild, 85% 18.4x42's with matching hub duals, new hyd pump 2 years ago, new clutch a year ago. Started better than a new car. over undder shifts smooth and quiet. Was very , very impressed. Havent worked witht he side shifter in whites, but seemed to to be good. Alot cheaper than a red or the other green. If I dont get too many "run away's" I will pull the trigger under a few conditons. Advise away. I am assuming this one will be a better tillage tractor than the 5088 IH I made the deal on. This is a a 2wd.

They are a good heavy tractor. The problem is the engine. If you need any parts you only have AGCO to get them at. A simple overhaul sleeve kit, bearing, and gaskets will run you over $10,000. NO JOKE!!! I have done two in the last year and a half. They are few if any after market engine parts for them. That makes them be high priced(like gold).

That Hercules engine is not a high hour running engine. It seems that they will only last 3-5 thousand hours between rebuilds.

Dave you have been posting about a different tractors for months now. They all seem to be the odd tractors. Not a main line one it seems. Are you just looking for the "deal" or is your budget real limited??? The reason I am asking is that the total cost of ownership is different than just the purchase price. It is the purchase price + maintenance cost - resale value. You will find the better "deal" is going to be a mainline tractor that will cost less to maintain and has a good resale/residual value. That will also take into consideration the local dealer network too.

JDseller is right about parts, but there is another source that costs less. Memphi Equip has new old stock military parts that work too. About 3 years ago overhauled neighbors 2-155, reground crank needed .020 under main set, crank grinder quoted over 500 for set. Memphis had them just over 300 a set. Ran fine until about a month ago, had a low speed rumble while chisel plowing field ends, found crank broken back of 4th main, but sounded OK when sped up. Replaced with crank out of military parts engine, older crank but was built much heavier between throws. Engine is much harder to work on too, can't remove either intake or exhaust manifold by itself, both must come off together, just one example.

Just looking for a resonable priced, tractor in that 105-160 hp range , that is not wore out. Getting too many acres for the stuff I have now, and the time I have to get it all done. Ideal would be all red, but It seems the whites are good , solid cheap HP. Hit a dozen dealers from Kimball, litchfeild, willmar, Albany, St Martin, and st cloud area. Good used tractor are few and far between, even under $35,000. It does not help that I am a "picky, cheap, gotta think about it" kind of guy, drives my wife nut's.

Red has a decades long history of too much engine for the trans/rear end. Always over-powering, and the rest craps out. You mentioned towns- most of them are IH, Arnold Eq. all IH. For years, what is in their shops? Trans/rear end problems. White, yeah, if you want to deal with Dick F at Lake Henry.......very excellent dealer.....he has been the most responsible person I"ve ever dealt with at any dealership! OK, equal to Kibble (JD) Eq in Montevideo- bought two tractors there. For your hp requirements, I"d say consider 4440 JD, beyond that, the 50 and especially 75 series- likely the 75 is the best JD ever built. Did you buy a 5088 for main tillage? Is that MFWD? You talked about 4WD- 2470 Case, others....I would stay with anything with a Cummins 855....Steiger, Versatile, after the early cast axle issues- but that is many years ago. Versatile with the "triple nickle" 555, V engine? NO! Bad rep. Cummins 855 has been the standard for durability for years.

Aslong as the others said too,you say you have too much to do and can't waste time. Then you go looking at 30-35 yearold tractors by companys out of busness,so parts are iffy. The 5088 isn't any better because it wasn't made very long and few were ever sold(been several years since ever saw 1 and none of the strong local IH farmers even bought them,so ????)JD tractors maybe aren't any better(mech),they are still here(parts-service) and have resale value. As the old filter ad said PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER.Your money and your call.
