Between 1948 and 1953, 1954 was slightly different with one piece windshield and different grille. Here's a bit more information:

Thanks for the reply it must be latter than 1952 according to
that information because it has the push button door handles

Check out Stovebolt.com

Tons of info there. Engine is most likely a 235 although a 261 was available in the late 50's and could have been swapped in.

Chevy used a 216.5 cubic inch from 1937-1953. In 1953 they came out the 235.5 Blue Flame and Thrift-King 6 cylinder engines and latter called it the Thriftmaster six. I had a Chevy 1951 1 1/2 ton truck that engine went bad and replaced the 216.5 with a 235.5 engine. A 235.5 will bolt right in. The 216 and 235 look a lot alike but the heads are different and won't interchange .

I have a 1952 that has the push button door handles and the painted grille. Chevy went from chrome grilles to painted grilles in 1952 because of the Korean war.

From the engine pictures it looks a lot like the 216 that is in the boys 1951 which we are going to be pulling out to install a built 292 in

My 1951 3/4 ton has the turn handle for the outside of the doors. Same color and grill, bumper is chrome and a smooth bevel not rippled like yours but thinking your is a heavier duty being a 1 1/2 or so. Also I have the curved back windows. chris

The 54 had one piece windshield. The 55's were built in series one and series two. Series two was the new body style. There wasn't too many things that inter changed between 54 and 55 body parts.

Nys. Where are the casting numbers on the engine I've combed the hole thing can't find any numbers or plates
Thanks shaun

I have a "49 & a "50. Both 6400s. One's a dump & the other is a flatbed with a PTO lift gate.
They both look like that in the front.

I think your truck is a 1952 model. Chevy changed the door handle mid year after they had used up the turn ones. I drove a 1952 3/4 ton pickup to work for ten years or more.

Engine info from a Chevy collector site. Quote:
"The 1952 Chevy trucks featured a Thriftmaster 216.5-cubic inch or a Loadmaster 235.5-cubic inch, in-line, six-cylinder, valve-in-head engine. The 216.5-cubic inch motor had a bore and stroke of 3.5 by 3.75 inches with a compression ratio of 6.5:1. It generated 90 horsepower at 3,400 rpm. The 235.5-cubic inch engine developed 105 hp at 3,600 rpm with a 6.7:1 compression ratio. It had 193 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm."

Here is couple of 1952 Chevy 3100 pickup pictures.

Another note on motors. The second series 1955 Chevy trucks came out with a 265 V8 engine, also. A first time for Chev.

Chevy had a 235 in 1941......Mainly used in Big trucks, but a few made their way into 1 ton, and 3/4 ton pickups.

Hey Dachshund your right I went to a differant book they did make a 235.5 for large trucks only. The book I was useing covering small trucks & cars. I know most of guys around here replaced their 216 when they went bad with a 235 because the 235 had a better lubucation system.
