Case 310 frozen engine

I ran my 310B, parked, tried to start, click!!. Replaced starter, same, I can pull it in neutral, also in gear with the clutch in, removed Hyd pump, same problem. I can lever the engine slightly through the timing hole, and clicking the starter increments the rotation slightly. Levering the engine feels mushy. Spark plugs are out also (first act). Any ideas?? Thanks.

Have you checked your coolant level??? sounds like you may have run it hot and scarred the cylinders.

Thanks for the response, I always check the coolant before running and it was full, but good thought about scoring. Maybe a broken ring could freeze the engine?

Thanks for the reply. My initial post included that check as well as removing the front hyd pump, plugs, anything that could load the engine. The tractor pulled freely in neutral or in gear with clutch in, so xmision is not a problem. It was running great when I parked it. Then would not start. Removed starter and levered the flywheel which would not move either direction. A dropped valve would allow the engine to move in one direction I think. However, a broken ring may lock it. But it seems there would have been some kind of noise with a broken ring???

A question I have is: what would a broken ring sound or feel like if the engine was running? I gave the engine a compression test a few months ago and the compression was 160 PSI all cylinders and it looks like the head and valve cover gaskets are not too old.

Egg on my face, I had pried through the inspection hole NOT the starter opening. So I did as you suggested and I can turn the engine about half way either direction. Does that fit a dropped and frozen valve?

Thanks

Well, latest check I took out the starter and pried on the flywheel (I mistakenly pried through the inspection hole initially). I was able to turn the flywheel about half way both directions. Does that point to a dropped and frozen valve? Thanks.

A big chunk of rust or carbon could have dropped into the combustion chambers of two cylinders. This will make it turn just short of 180. Do not pull start it or force it. Pull the head, checking for bent or stuck valve train components.
It could also be a broken crank! Jim

Thanks, I'll be pulling the valve cover today as a preliminary check, best case is a broken valve spring & dropped valve. Fingers are crossed.

Thanks for the reply. Since the initial post I have been able to turn the engine 1/2 way either direction. Current theory is a dropped valve. I'll be pulling the valve cover today as a preliminary check for a broken valve spring.
