Wondering why I use so much oil 3/4 of a quart in an acre and a half
Got 95# compression on both cylinders.
Pulling 15" of vacume
No leaks plugs and exhaust ports look normal
Starting cold and driving off smokes for a minute maybe the first 50 feet

seems like the exhaust valve is getting a build up of some carbon build up ?

Engine was apart down to the last bolt last summer for a rod replacement
any ideas what is causing this ?

This is the left side.

The right side.. notice the exhaust port.

This is the right exhaust port.. no black build up carbon from oil excaping

Is this engine a KT 17? Is there oil in the air filter? If you have engine oil in the air filter your reed valve in the valve cover is bad. This will suck out oil out of the engine and into the air intake.

i'm not familar with that engine but it looks like a valve guide umbrella type seal is coming apart...it should be showing some oil in exhaust port if engine is burning oil.
what weight/brand engine oil are you using?

Oil rings not sealing?
You could be burning up the oil enough that it does not come out the exhaust. Had an Allis G that did that to me.
Have you checked the color of your antifreeze? I know its weird but I had a Oliver that would "consume" oil but it wasn't consuming oil.

Ya nailed it Series II Just pulled the head but cylinder looks good almost all the way down except for a little area next to the bottom and on the bottom of the cylinder ..looks like a glazed spot camera dead will get pics later. More carbon under the head and just above rings worse than the last time we had it down last summer.

using straight 30w recommended by the Cub Cadet folks but maybe too cheap of oil. Family Dollar wolfs head.

Air cooled Kohler 17 Hp series II
I just posted here expecting answers to how some other folks feel what the problem could be, as all gasoline engines show the same signs from the inside... Guess I'll be going deeper than I wanted to Rings, head gaskets, (Jug Gasket is no longer available) rings and valve seals... possibly having valve guides drilled and some pressed in this block don't have any either case almost $200.00 just for the parts mentioned.

Only have one head off.. wiggling the exhaust valve does seem to have a smidgit of play.. cant see if it has an actual sleeve style guide ..May have to have it drilled and one put in. other side does have more build up on the valve stem could be the source .

i dont think so...i use it for oil changes in my shop unless the customer requests a special brand.
did you replace rings when you changed that rod out...i was taught to replace them anytime they come out of bore...hone cyl and use Hastings cast iron rings...chrome rings will not seat unless its a fresh bore.

No I didn't Maybe should have though I have the papers that came with the engine has less than 4 years on it from previous owner. It cost him over $1400.00 when he got it, so I assumed it wouldn't need rings as they looked OK and they alone are pricey. I know Hindsight is ..........
