Follow up on landing craft transmission

Couple of weeks ago I posted about a transmission in a WW2 landing craft that wouldn't go into the four syncronized gears. Tranny has five forward gears. Low is non-sycronized and the other four are syncro. We could get it into low but not the other four. Jim had suggested the syncro rings might be cracked or siezed.

The machine had sat for fifteen years before he bought it with a bad engine. He pulled off the driveshaft between the engine and tranny and I put an orbit motor on the tranny to spin it so the lube pump would work while we towed it to the neighbor's to have the engine replaced. The new engine is in and running and today he called to say the tranny now goes into all the gears. The vibes and jarring from the engine must have loosened things up. He was really excited and deservedly so. I can't wait to run over there to rear it run. Engine is a 7 cylinder Continental radial airplane engine and you can hear it coming! Jim

Too bad you are so far from TX, otherwise I would come to see & hear that one!

jim, i don't know where you are, but i know of anouther landing craft that still works in fact the owner gives rides. he will likely be at findley this spring. i used to belong to the mvpa till lately when i sold my ford gpa. the owners name is tom and he calls his machine toms toy. i have riden in it and i can tell you it is a great experence. he lives here in mich. good luck, wally

I'm in NWIA. The owner does know of some others still running. He has riden in one in Wisconsin. The owner of that one passed away a not too long ago. Jim

On another note, he called me last night and mentioned the engine oil pressure was fluctuating. When this engine was running on a test stand the pressure was steady, but now in the vehicle it's fluctuating.I knew it's a dry sump system so I asked him where the oil supply was and he said it was below the engine. I threw out the suggestion that there might be an air leak somewhere between the tank and the oil pump, so he checked fittings and found a loose one. The pressure is steady now so he's feeling good about that too. I just can't wait to hear it run in the vehicle. Heard it run on the test stand with no muffler and it was so noisy it was obnoxious. Jim
