need help with 4010

Guys, I am stuck with the retaining ring in the barrel of my break away remote. They were leaking bad and I am replacing all the o rings and seals. I have depressed the spring with a c clamp and bolt and need to get that ring out in the picture. It sits in a groove and holds the spring loaded deal. The ball bearing that connects to the remote hoses is on the other side. I can't get it out with picks. Is there a trick? Its not a snap ring but a wire ring. Nothing to grab with snap ring pliers

If it's that little c ring on the inside, try taking a small screwdriver or pick or both and get it under one end. Then use a little screwdriver to work around it and force it INTO the barrel. Then, put the screwdriver into the groove, and use the pick to pull it back over the screwdriver and work it out. They can test your patience at best. You really have to just keep fooling with it until it comes out.

Some come out easily while others can be hateful. On really stubborn ones I use a torch to heat the ring. The heat takes the temper out and it will come out easily.

Is it rusted in maybe? Push the plunger down and fill the
cavity with penetrating oil. Let it set overnight if you can.
Sometimes you can get on one of the tails of the ring with a
small punch and turn the whole ring in the barrel, then you
can get behind it with a small screwdriver. If you put the end
of the screwdriver in the vise, you can put a little bend in it.
Then it will slide behind the snap ring better.

I second the idea of heating the ring...have done this often...the kit includes a new ring, Bob

i have rebuilt a thousand of them and heating the ring is the only easy way to do it.I also use a drill press I chuck a small pin punch in the chuck and crank the table of the drill press to push the plunger down.Older tractor mechanic showed me that trick about 16 years ago when i first started at john deere.
