I hate borrowing

Uggh, got bit again.

I REALLY hate to have to borrow something. Always ends up badly.

Anyhow, I recently shallow tilled about an acre of land to smooth it out.
We never really had a need for a chain drag, but were going to need one after this job.

A good friend of my fathers had a nice, heavy unit. My father is a machinst, and had done some favors for his friend in the past. Never asking for payment, he just mentioned that he would borrow the chain drag one day.

So, we go to pick it up. Now, mind you, my dads friend is 78yrs old. In bad health, and in need of a heart, and lung transplant. Bad shape.
We load the drag in our trailer, and my dads friend mentioned that he just got it back from a guy that borrowed it from him, and that he brought it back tangled up. Knowing that chain drags can get out of shape pretty easy, we didnt think much about it.
Until we got home.
Whoever borrowed it before should be shot. I swear, they must have been dragging in a stump field. Everything is bent, links are missing or broken.

I just cant imagine the type of person, that would borrow something, tear it up, and bring it back, and not say something, at the very least. Also, to bring it back, after someone was nice enough to let you borrow it, with the owner being in bad health, and knowing that he cant physcally fix it himself.

We worked on it for a few hours, and are going to try to get it back in good shape for him. We are going to have to re weld and bend a lot of parts back right, but hopefully, we can get it back in workable condtion for the old man.

Some people.

i hear ya. i hate borrowing but when ever i do witch is not very often maybe once in every 2yrs if im dier need of something well anyways when ever i do something brakes or something but i never hand it back to them like that i always repair it or buy the new item and tell them the storry. although a lot of people borrow from me and when i get it back its destroyed and i never get anything out of besides a mess ti fix at least i pay for what i borrow broken or not.

My dad never like to borrow, and I do not either. He always
spent more time fixing it to use, or when it broke, than using
it.

I have had good luck borrowing and loaning tools and machinery to my neighbors and friends over the past 45years, with one exception, 16ft. BH trailer, it NEVER comes back ready to go out untill something gets fixed.

What I really hate is someone who buys all sorts of gadgets, (electronics etc) goes to every movie etc, then comes to borrow something "...because I don't have the money to buy..."

Another reason to not lend came up in Sunday School lesson today. Read Luke 6:30.

Dad borrowed a neighbors 830 Case to cultivate with
one year(our big tractor was down waiting on
parts.)After two days the clutch went out,dad
pulled it to town and he put a new clutch in it.
The owner found out about it when the Case dealer
asked him if the new clutch was working alright, six
months later! That is how I was raised.

Back in the day, My divorced sister had an old 55 Plymouth that was ailing. She was raising 3 boys on her own. I told her I'd look at it...she went in the house and spent some time with the wife. I started it (jumpers) and checked and the alternator wasn't putting out anything. I went out to the local parts house and got a rebuilt one and put it on. Went in the house and told her the cable was loose. She must have found out I put the alternator on and never came back for quite a few years. Best to tell them!

PS The way to tell if an alternator is putting out current is to put a steel pocket knife blade on the middle of the back where the bearing is and if it is putting out, it will be attracted like a magnet. ohfred

2 Weeks ago the tranny went out on the wife's Surburban (you would think Chevy could build a tranny that would last more than 260k) so she called her dad about borrowing his spare car. In 2 weeks I replaced the water pump, 2 belts, wiper blades and the tail pipe. Will not tell him cause he will want to pay me for the aprts and labor.

I used to borrow an implement or tractor from my neighbors now and then. They liked it for years because it was the only time their stuff got any maintenance. I would literally put stuff back together for them. But after a few years they found ways to make themselves believe that they were getting the short end, which they could not stand. By then I had accumulated pretty much everything I needed. When they borrowed my trailer it came back with bent light bracket and wire hitch connection pulled apart.

I don't like to borrow or lend equipment either. Seems like most stuff I lend out doesn't come back in the same shape it left. Damaged tires, pieces bent or missing, etc.
Last time I borrowed a chopper box (was waiting on a new main apron for one of mine), it cost me over $500 - a new 12.5L15 and a new bottom beater (@#$%! thin Gehl beaters!). But the tire and beater gave out when I was using it, so as far as I was concerned, it was my responsibility to replace them. Owner offered to pay me back, but like some of you have said, that's not how I was raised.

Guess I've had pretty good luck, lending stuff over the years. Neighbor was a peach- he'd borrow my Oliver 550, and fix whatever needed- including clutch the failed under his watch. Didn't tell me until he brought it back, and I finally talked him into letting me pay for the parts, at least. He and a retired machinist friend had fun rebuilding a tooth on the bull gear of my baler, again, no charge.

Another guy would borrow my car trailer to go get his FIL's tractor in the spring, and again to take it home in the fall. I wouldn't take anything for the loan, so the third year, he brought it back repainted, and the bent fender repaired.

Only sort-of downer was when another neighbor borrowed my baler when his jumped time and busted a bunch of stuff. He baled my last field on time, like he promised, and brought it back in good shape. A few months later, I had a little digging project, so asked to borrow his backhoe. "Oh, sorry, I never loan anything out." "Well, you seemed to be pretty willing to borrow my baler." "I didn't know if you would loan it or not, and if you hadn't, there wouldn't have been any hard feelings." Not sure if that would have been the case, but I didn't hold a grudge, and he remained a friend. But he never asked to borrow anything again.

I hate borrowing and lending. I end up fixing other peoples problems when I borrow. Then, I always have to go track down my stuff when I want to use it. People never bring it back.
