Sandhill cranes in Michigan

Any of you guys in Michigan of any of the other states where Avipel has gotten an emergency exemption for use might want to check out this link. Apparently there's a seed coat that keeps cranes, pheasants, blackbirds and others from eating the seed. I need to talk to my chemical supplier about it post haste.

Haven't seen any damage from theme here, yet. Do see them regularly, they have a nesting area in the next quarter. I expect they have the potential to be a real problem. Any one remember a product called Crowtox? My dad used to treat a part of the seedcorn with it and mix it in with the rest in the planter. Apparently, a couple kernels was all the crows needed to ingest, to discourage their presence in the freshly planted/sprouted corn.

Wonder if this stuff would discourage turkeys.
Lots of them around here - saw twenty in a group in the next field while planting oats this spring. A flock of them could wreck a field of oats, corn, beans in short order.

They claim it'll give a belly ache to any bird that eats it. Says they get discouraged and go elsewhere. I've seen a boatload of cranes here already. I've got a permit from Fish and Wildlife to shoot 10 of'em again, same as last year, but that's easier said than done. Last year the boys managed to kill two.

I emailed the company to find out how to get the stuff. Hoping I can just get it from Gallagher Farm Supply.

Ya,and I have to wonder if we've made a mistake shooting any of the coyotes? What we need is a good predator to take out the birds or the eggs from the nest and some of the fawns, and we have it if we'd leave them alone. I think they'd have to be in a pack to bother live calves too much and I don't think they've hit that level. All respect to Rays sheep of course.

Must be getting close to that level down here. I have a pack or two of coyotes here. They call from my woods to some across the road. Earlier this week or maybe it was last week, we heard a commotion behind the barn and shined a few looking over my calves. They vamoosed soon as the light hit them though and haven't returned or at least not so noisily. I do have a dog tied up out there. So she might have helped prevent some trouble.
