Any Badger Trappers Here???

I have permission to trap badgers on the farm and am using 220 conibear body traps over the holes. I have been doing pretty well with four this spring but some are digging around the trap and making the hole wider and larger. I need to re-coat the traps as they are showing rust. Any good advice from the experts???

Dachshund's are the ticket  .... Here, a badger is a dachs and a dog is a hund. Kinda explains whyb them shortlegged little b@stards are so hard headed....

We have a "set" area about a mile away. Covers a little over an acre. Fox and badger use the same set of holes just go to thier own condos......
Do you have many animals? It's funny that they can be killed here and you hardly see them but places in the UK are overrun and they are protected....

Didn't answer your question, but I feel better.

check your game laws, here it is ileagle to make a set over the den,..but you can buy trap dye and wax to help hide the trap and the smell...i'd use a foothold and bury them,.. that way they won't see the trap and any digging could result in a catch

Thanks, the game warden told me to set the 220s over the hole, but the 220 is the largest you can use. We have a large problem with too many here and they even like to dig right in the middle of the gravel road. The last dip I used didn't last very long so I'll buy the "good stuff" next time.

conibers are not legal here so I use legholds.I dont specifically set for badgers very often,( about all gone here)but i have trapped a few over the years. If i do set for one i'll use a double coiled no 2 3/4 or 3 ,night latched, offset, double swiveled, and staked, set blind in the den entrance,or in a hole set nearby baited with either cow tongue, skunk,or both. All leg holds here must be offset ,and have a 8" max jaw spread.skunk makes a good bait for both badger and coyote.make sure you got enough trap, those badgers are sure hard on one.and make sure if you set in the open theres no bushes nearby where they can get wrapped up and pull loose. For some reason cow tongue makes a good bait here for about everything.Probably because animals are used to feeding on cattle that die.little trick my uncle used to do was to take a old dirty shirt or something and plug the extra den entrances with it,then be really careful about keeping trap and all scent free ,and setting his trap in the one left clear.

you can use a trap stabilizer and do a trail set, add some sticks to make a forcing fence to get them in to the trap. also, snares do a good job too on a trail set. try dipping the traps in walnut shell husks, soak em and make a liquid. it will mask human scent. be sure to stake the traps down solid, otherwise the coyotes will carry off the carcass....trap and all. i get a lot of trapping supplies from murrays lures dot com.
