Oats are in!

I caught up with RayP. Finished up the oats about 4:30 this afternoon. What's that saying? Mud in the oats, dust in the wheat and the bins will overflow? I didn't exactly mud them in,but I sure didn't raise much dust. Wasn't real impressed with the check I had to write for seed and fertilizer, but it's done. Beat my record early plant date by two days over two years ago.

Good job, Randy! Now where is that warm weather that we were enjoying? Mine aren"t coming up yet, but I don"t expect them for a few more days. Rain right after planting was to my favor, I thought... Hope that our early planting is to our advantage.

Yes, the fertilizer price was shocking. Alfalfa price was really a little lower this year, suprisingly. I ran across my last year"s bill, doing my income tax yesterday.

The weather sure wasn't what it ws supposed to be today, that's for sure. Last two days I was running the big tractor with the cab. Had to run the air from time to time. Supposed to be mid 50s and sunshine today. I WISH. I was planting with an open tractor, had my hood tied up half the day. Last pass across the last headland the sun came out enough to cast a shadow. Supposed to be back up in the 70s Sunday and Monday,so that should get them going.

Only thing that was down this year was brome grass seed. I was pleasantly surprised at that, but the alfalfa and fertilizer more than ate up the slight reduction.

I stopped and looked at my 2A rye patch on the way home tonight. It's mostly gone. Volunteer buckwheat from the year before came up last August and did what buckwheat's s'posed to do. Killed it. If/when it happens again my grandson will have a job with the string trimmer.

I take it you planted a permanent stand with it. This usually wet piece can be worked now. MI and MA must be about the same, so I should plant mine now? Thanks in advance for your answer.

If you're weather's been like ours, might as well. I planted March 31st two years ago. Seeded to alfalfa and brome. Had some of the best oats I ever had and the seeding is super. Last year I saw somebody planting alfalfa with a Brillion Sure Stand seeder way before I got in the field. He got a beautiful stand of pure alfalfa.

I was wishing mine hadn't come up yet, but the oats and alfalfa was out of the ground by last Saturday. I was chewing my fingernails nails looking at the long-term forecast for a while there because there were some mid-20s ahead. That's all sorted out now and if the current forecast stands we probably won't even get so much as another frost here in SE MN.
