match install the pistons...install the pistons so that as one piston is moving down, its twin is moving up. This will help balance the weights.

| | It is certainly possible but one wonders why you would wish to do this. Dean |

Actually how about that thought. Would it be better to just leave off the bottom oiler ring on the four ring piston ?

No, if you had to leave one ring off make it one of the compression rings preferably the 3rd ring down. The oil ring would just make it start pumping oil.

| | Thanks guys, for all the help. Since it appears to be far from a Unanimous decesion I best play it safe and put in all 3 ring pistons. Thanks for all your help! |

Thanks. I did mean two different piston styles and NOT just leaving off the rings...

There may be a slight weight difference between the two, but this isn't a high reving drag race engine, once its all back togather you won't notice anything.

Would not recommend it...you will have compression issues, lubrication issues, plug fowling issues on the cylinders with one less ring. There should be someone out there with a couple of rings for you...pretty cheap...maybe free if you let us know what engine/size rings you need.

Using both types should not cause any problems. Friend had a tractor with 2 standard pistons and 2 over bore and ran for years that way., Perkins.

I think he meant different style pistons, not leaving rings off of two pistons.
