Went out to the farm last Saturday. Missing four wheel weights for an M Farmall and also one Wheel. All cast Iron. I took a ride around to two scrap yards with pictures. One supervisor said he would e-mail to the other scrap yards in the area. I thought that was nice of him. Sure wish I had been there to have a "conversation" with the thieves. For anyone in the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati area, be alert. Ellis

Noticed a "little manhole" cover off a survey marker in the road missing today. Bet it ends up at a salvage yard. They'll stael anything that isn't locked down anymore. Good luck on finding the culprits. Often think the salvage yards are in bed with the thieves.

checked the church cemetary last night, the last of the bronze veterans flag holders have disappeared. guess we're all plastic now.

Lord God, what is this world coming to? Bronze, you say? I'd like to give the thieves some bronze, like a bundle of brazing rods right upside their lowdown heads. Our state requires the scrapyards to take thumb prints & pictures + a permit from the seller. It's helped some but the lowdown scumbags just drive across the state line and sell it.

Theft of metal, scrap or otherwise, has become an epidemic.

A friend of mine recently had his pick-up box trailer stolen, after being filled with other metal items. He found it at the site below but was required to buy it back for $100.00 even though the cops caught the (judgement proof) thieves.

Check with e-town salvage on US 50 west of Cincinnati.

The Scrap dealers.. At least Most of them could care less where it comes from... as long as they get the ALLMIGHTY $$$ DOLLAR,,out if it, Sad Larry KF4LKU

It is a similar madness that is killing our economy and sending jobs out of the country. It is called greed and worshiping money.
Some of the richest people that I know are not happy and never will be. Many of them wish they had a simpler life and did not "need" all of the expensive props in life just to keep them going.
Oh well, it is one of those lessons that gets learned again and again.

What I am not understanding is how can all these scrap guys take in stuff that is likely stolen, like tractor wheel weights, air conditioner condensers and copper tubing.
Do they have to take down info like drivers license #s and license plate #s and stuff for anyone that drops off "scrap" metal.

It's get'n bad in western Ky too. A while back a neighbor had the suitcase weights take'n off the front of his tractor one night while it was set'n in his drive way. Deadbeats and crank heads are get'n pretty bawlsie. Last time I had something stolen the lady who answered the phone at the sherif's office told me if I found out who did it to call'm back. I'd bet good money that some one around here close is going to get shot while steal'n stuff before the end of the year.

It is the new American way.

As long as you don't steal it yourself.... it is now OK to buy it. Used to be called a "fence" a (criminal). Where does the scrap dealer think all that copper came from?

We don't allow slave labor in the USA, but buy clothes made by slaves in other nations.

Don't pollute the air in the USA, but buy products made in terribly dirty polluting Chinese factories.

We don't treat women as second class citizens in the USA, but buy products from countries that do.

We don't want illegal aliens in the USA, but hire them to fix the roof because they are cheaper.

If it is cheaper.... we don't care about the consequences.

Think it depends on the scrap yard and or state. I have a brother never worked a regular job in his life, and he does a lot of scrapping. His picture, drivers license, and tag # are on file at several yards he uses.
One of the yards called the cops when three yahoos showed up with a bunch of busted up bronze cemetary plaques. Two guys got two years and the girl got probation.

A friend of mine is putting in a housing development. All the sewer and storm drains are in place. Someone stole the catch basin grates and manhole lids. He now has large rocks on each and every manhole cover and grate. He is more than likely is going to have to weld them in place.

In my area they're going into the cemeteries and prying off the bronze plaques provided by the government to war vets. It's hard to believe that any scrap dealer would be so low-life as to accept a bronze plaque, about 18" by 24", bearing the vet's name and branch of service, without question.

It is time to license scrap sellers. Make it as hard to get a scrapper license as it is to get a driver's license. This is getting blankety blank ridiculous and it is nationwide. Much as I hate more govenment control it has gotten to where the law is not doing anything with the perpetrators so we have to make it harder to sell scrap.

I had my eight space campground shut down by idiots who stole each power drop while I was out of town. The stripped out breaker boxes and risers were found under the porch of the theives house. Nothing has been done yet almost a year later. I see the theives regularly around town and they just sneer at me and give me the finger. They even live in public housing now.

So,another business is done for so someone can buy a few dollars worth of drugs and beer.
And they wonder why there aren't any new businesses in town.

People are getting desperate, and scrap prices are high, At work we had a grave marker made from pipe, we lay it down and mark where the grave goes, pretty heavy, we looked for it the other day, low and behold, it was gone, went to scrap yard, looked around, but didn't find

Well guys you need to make up your mind.

On this very site every day I see lots of messages saying we need less government, fewer laws, all government is bad, get out of my life.

Now today you are saying the scapers need to be licensed, cops need to be more aggressive, and the criminals need to be prosecuted.

Make up your mind.

Seems to me you want law and order if you are the victim....but free range to do as you see fit if you are the law breaker. Seems like a bit of a conflict here.

(quoted from post at 14:45:00 03/28/12) The scrap yards are the thieves.

I agree..
Government has given scrap yards a right to steal..Used to be they had to give it up if you proved it was yours,Not anymore.......

friend of mine had all the copper pipe yanked out of one of his renthouses--it was still in the back of his former renters truckbed-all cut up, renter went to jail. good luck getting him to pay damages. friend laughed when he saw the news when a thief was electrocuted trying to steal high wire lines, and I can't blame him.

If I sell any metal I need to provide photo ID. We're falling for the big government trap. Rather than creating a bureaucracy that still won't do anything for us let's enforce the laws we have. The trailer in the scrapyard the guy had to buy back, how about putting a padlock on the front gate of the business and hauling the owner in off for possession of stolen goods unless he can come up with a name and address of who he bought it from. "Judgement proof" change the law so people are not judgement proof for damages from committing a crime, this means your butt is locked up until you have a restitution plan if your plan fails back to jail with no driver's license, no welfare, no food stamp, no voting, no hunting or fishing license, no income tax refunds, no protected property and no ability to sue in court until your judgement is cleared. This would also mean no air conditioned jails no cable TV in jail and the ability to park their butts in a dark solitary confinement room. To lay some physco-babble on you- they won't change until you create a "significant emotional event" in their lives, unfortunately our legal system has gotten it's hands tied and can't create situations that would effect significant long term change in the miscreants of our society. Why aren't rail road tracks getting stolen? Because the scrap yards know if caught with it they'll face criminal charges, why not the same for bronze stars off of grave markers? If the scrap yard knows having them will cause forfeiture of their business and 5 years in the jail they'll do a cost-benefit analysis of the situation and pass on the markers. Oh yes and last but least if you get stuff stolen you get to write the unrecovered value ONE FOR ONE against a state or local tax liability, meaning the county will have to eat it on your property taxes, or the state doesn't get to collect sales tax on your next car or doesn't get to collect your tag fee this year. This way if you loose $2,000 the folks responsible for prosecuting the criminal will loose $2,000, might make them put down the doughnut and get off their half moons and find your stuff.

So many junkers are on welfare or ssi disability,,,They have nothing but spare time day and night to scrounge...If the scrap yards had to 1099 all their customers a lot of the problems would disappear..

In Louisiana, Farmers and Ranchers can call the Livestock Brand Commission, they investigate all agriculture related crime, they will actively investigate things like scrap iron theft that the local Sheriffs department won"t put down the donuts long enough to fool with and they have jurisdiction state wide. Maybe your state has a similar organization.

Scrap yard owners must have some deep contacts in DC. They are one of the last all cash businesses that are designed to run "under the radar".
First, by dealing in cash, there is no record of exactly how much tax they owe because their income and profit cannot be proven. Next, by being a cash biz, it is too easy for a thief to drop off stolen stuff and roll with enough cash to buy the next bottle of wine, liquor, beer, or drugs.
The scrap yeard owners could care less if it stolen, they just want to pay a fee per pound so they can tunr a profit. If they move their inventory fast enough, it is likely that they will never get caught with stolen stuff.
One of the funniest stories that I recently heard was that the daughter of a scrap yard owner was stealing cash. The proof that they run under the radar is that it took years for him to figure out that she was skimming cash.

Back when there weren't but a few tire sizes, tire theft was prevelent. Pick-up trucks were especialy vonerable because once the spare was removed from underneath, most people kept the spare lieing in the bed. One night at work an employee came in the warehouse saying "Cecil, there's a feller kicking and cussing a blue streak out by your truck. Cecil went out with a pipe and beat that feller without mercy then reached under the wheel and released the steel trap from the perp's hand. He untied the trap from the truck bed and hid it before calling police. When the police asked Cecil why he wuped on the feller like that,Cecil said "because he wouldn't put my tire down". Policeman to the thief "why did you keep on trying to run off with the tire"? "Caus mys fingaus woa stuk up in da". No arrest was made but I bet that fool still looks to make certain there's not a trap tounge waiting below the center of a wheel before he picks it up. I spect he would go to the pen now days for setting that trap.

No one wants "regulation" of there freedoms but what no one seems to relics is that it's not that the gov is trying to regulate and hind law abiding people it's that there are crooked illmoral folks that will lie cheat and steal for $. The regs are there to keep those greedy jerks in check. Like the home loan thing, lenders were intentionally giving out loans that they knew were bad but they did not care cause they just sold the loans to a different company. And now look what happend, economy on the toilet. And it looks like we are gonna have to start regulating the banks again. Big gov has it's limits but putting regs on industries that keep them honest is a good thing. Why most people don't see it till it's to late I'll never understand. You can't trust people, they will steal your wheel weights you car your house anything so they can make money.

For a while there, the local scrapyards were putting out ads that all but openly encouraged theft.

"Open 24 hours, 7 days a week" - Gee, what kind of people would want to sell scrap under the cover of darkness?

"Top dollar paid for catalytic converters" - Gee, where are all these catalytic converters coming from?

Scrap is high, easy to obtain, hard to prove theft, and people are broke and desperate.

I'd like to have a beer with Cecil!!!!
