Temp gauge or sensor?

So I fixed a minor wiring issue On my Oliver 1850 but the heat temp gauge still is not reading is there a way to test the gauge and the sensor to see wich is not working or should I just replace both?

Just got a brilliant idea for ya. Try one or the other. If that doesn't work, replace both...

Take the wire off the sending unit, ground it to the tractor and the gauge needle should move all the way to one side of the gauge. I think needle should move all the way to hot.

Learn something everyday. In reading your post I started wondering how a temp gauge worked. Electric temp gauge should do just as you said since the sending unit is basically a means of ground.

I use a non contact thermometer at the water outlet housing and/or the sending unit. The temperature of the coolant will be close. Gerard
