I have a international 986 and would like to put a turbo on it.A couple people that I have talked to said that I cant do it because the motor was not made to have a turbo on it so it would probably blow up after working it all day mowing hay.I have put turboes on plenty of other tractors and never had a problem .I could use some more advise if any one can help.Thank you Dave.

Put one go for it . 120hp would be a good number.I think you could use the 1066 or 1086 fan for the extra cooling.

Will it work to put a turbo on it? yes

Is the same engine as the 1066? No

The 1066 has a larger oil pump to furnish additional oil for the turbo plus the additional six piston cooler jets added to the block. NA engines use one cooling jet per piston, Turbo engines use two cooling jet per piston. The Turbo engine uses different pistons and different compression rings. The cylinder heads are little different. The radiator and fan are larger.

The 10 uses a 14 inch clutch versus the 12 inch used on the 9. There are a few bearings that are heavier in the 10 transmission. The bull pinions, bull gears, and axles are all heavier on the 1066

Ok thanks so far for the help. Now the next ? is, what exhaust manifold would I need and I think I I would probably have to use 1486 parts to put a turbo on my 986 being that they both are 436 engines,Am I thinking rite or not? Thanks again for the help with this project.Dave

The 414, 436 and 466 engines share a common block. The difference is in length of stroke.

A manifold off a 1086, 1486, 1586 would bolt right on and work perfectly.

You might run into a problem if you try to squeeze 150-200HP out of your 986 with a turbo, but if you you keep the HP increase modest, I bet the engine will actually run COOLER.
