getting to old to dig potatoes on my knees anymore would like to find an old digger that i can pull behind my 8n small that leaves the potatoes on top of the ground maybe a horse drawn i can convert or even a 3 pt hitch working or repairable must be mostly there thanks any info on these greatly appreciated

My dad uses a 1 row JD horse drawn lister to dig potato at the end of the season. He uses a 2 row ford lister to dig the rows, plants the potatoes at the bottom of the furrows and as they grow he knocks down the soil around them and then eventually uses a home made tiller plow to hill them. Sometimes the lister doesn't get deep enough to get all the potatoes though. All of this is done with an 8N ford.

what does the home made digger look like is it poss to get pictures of it so i can build on we have no prob planting and hilling them it is just the digging on my knees that is getting to me 73 now and knees don"t work as good as they used to thanks for any info what is a lister not familiar with that thanks this sight works great doesn"t it

Here's a digger in a museum in CA. I should've had one of these when I grew a lot of Kennebec and Red Bliss spuds. Hal

There were not modifications made. We just set the old JD lister as deep as it will go and my dad has the drawbar down and we "list" the potatoes out.

Here is a website with something that looks similar:

My Grandfather using a potato digger, around 1923. I asked my Aunt the names of the horses, but she said she did not remember.

I have an iron age, I think, potatoe digger like the one pictured below. It is complete and should function with a little oil and some paint. It comes with the original 2 horse tounge(sp). I just removed it from the old barn
on my mother and dads farm. It could be yours at a reasonable price.
I am however in western, pa.

what is a JD lister doesn"t ring a bell can you send me a pic [email protected] thanks is it what they called a sod buster a plow with mole boards on both sides that made a ditch and put the dirt on the sides ???

yeah that is a little far for me too old thanks for the pic though I am looking for the one that is just like an old one horse plow but it hac an upside shovel ty;e digger and kind of a rack that let the dirt fall through and kept the potatoes on top easy to convert to 3 pt hitch and easy to pull thanks great site isn"t it

Talk to me JED. My email should work on the modern side. I don't think I am very far away from you. I could use a spare.

I use an irrigation shovel on the A rear tool bar it works well. My potatoes get hilled with the disc hillers so that makes them dig well.

I have an old pto driven one, needs a part welded on it and a pto shaft other than that its all there..Im in northern minnesota so prob to far to go to get but its here, dont know if i'll ever use the thing...Bob

I will have to see if my dad can get a picture of it (I am in Texas; the lister is in Nebraska). It actually was a lister/planter. Instead of cutting a slit in the soil and planting the corn (ground remained essentially flat), it would dig a furrow and plant the corn at the bottom of the furrow. The when you cultivated you would throw most of the soil back on the corn and if you wanted to go again the would use a "go-dig" and hill the corn.

There are a few pictures similar here under implement photos

Where abouts in western pa? I raise a few spuds and
could use a digger. Spade fork is too much work for
half an acre.
