OT Over seeding lawn

Most of the grass in my yard is thin to none, but there are a few decent spots here and there. A couple of weeks ago, I overseeded the entire yard hoping for a snow that never came. Finally had a little rain on it and some of the new grass is starting to show up. Now the dandylions are THICK and growing like crazy. I need to spray to kill the dandylions, but will that kill the new grass seed that is just coming up. If I wait for the grass to get started, the dandylions will go to seed and then I'll have even more to contend with. Everything was dormant when I overseeded. What should I do with this mess other than tear it all up and start over? Chris

Spray now on a warm sunny day.
Grass will multiply and replace the dandelions.
Plants compete for food in the soil.
The ones with the best root structure will thrive at the expense of the others.
Dandelions have good roots.
"overseeding" to crowd out the weeds is questionable in my opinion.

Chris: I would think now would be a good time to use 24D to kill the dandylions and other broadleaf weeds as the gardens and soybean fields are yet to be planted. Armand

Wait until the grass is established, after it has been mowed three times spot spray the weeds with ortho weed b gon.

Just spray it with 2-4D it will only kill the broad leaves. It will not affect the grass at all. It is one of the cheapest sprays out there too. Spray it as early as you can so the dandelions don't go to seed.

Rule of thumb is not to spray till you mow it 3 times. Dandelions will be back anyway but it costs money to seed.

Fall is a better time to get a good root kill on dandylions BUUUTTT, anytime is a good time to spray a weed. Yes you may have to spray a couple of times during the year to keep ahead of them. But why in the world anyone would leave them go to seed until fall is beyond me. If you do, then you will also have billions more dandylion seed to contend with.

2,4-D, and most other growth regulator chemicals, that selectively control broad leaf weeds in grass state a time interval between when you can seed, then spray. The growth regulators can affect juvenile grass seedlings. As others have said, don't spray until you 1. READ and UNDERSTAND the label of the chemical that you plan to use. 2, 4-D label says 30 days, IIRR. When in doubt, defer to what the label says.

The best time to spray and actually kill dandylions is in the fall when they draw nutriants into the roots. If you spray 24D now you will stunt the dandylions enough to keep them from blooming but it will kill the new grass not the dandylions. The 24D label should have the directions, or they are available online.

For now mow the dandylions often to keep them from going to seed and keep the grass watered until the grass can get established. Spray 24D or Weed-B-Gone in the fall after the grass is established.

Good luck.

I've found the best time to seed a yard is just before the first snow late fall or early winter. I always disk and remove the old weeds before seeding. Haven't had any luck over seeding or with spring planting.

Dandelions are the first greens of spring. My mother taught me to eat them.2 women in the neighborhood used to pick dandelions in my garden every spring. They brought me a big bag of home made raised doughnuts.Front of my hay field is beautiful when the dandelions bloom. The roots have a medicineal use.In 1957 100000 pounds of the roots were used for liver medicine. The blossoms make good wine.it seems the more money people have the dumber they get. They pay 2or3 bucks for a dozen fishing worms I get free in my garden. You can go out on the pasture and tip over cow flaps with a hand cultivator and get earthworms free.
