Hi Guy"s Droped the hydro oil on my 706 as it was very milky, took out 2 plugs up front and 1 direct in middle of rear end. there is another plug on each side of the rear end plug, when i crack them open a little i get a red oil out of those other 2.Is this a different oil than is in the rest of it? A guy I know said it would take about 17 gals. of hydro oil. would that be correct. Thanks guy"s any help or comments will certainly be appreciated.

Yes, the plugs on the final drives have their own oil supply. They have a fill / check plug on the rear side of the final drive housings at about the 4 oclock / 8 oclock positions and need to be filled to the level of this fill / check hole on each side. The other plugs drain the transmission / hydraulics and differantial parts.

The long obsolete hytran spec was B-6, but thst is now replaced by an oil that has the IH MS 1209 spec.

Thanks Jon, your imfo was very helpful and appreciated. Does 17 gal's of hyro oil sound about right and how much of the other oil for ,think you called it yhe final drive?

It's been a year since I ran into that final drive oil problem on a new to me 856. I believe the 856 final drives hold about 4 qts (fill to the bottom of the fill / check plug hole). The final drives will not fill from the main transmission case unless certain modifications have been made to allow that. Yours having a different oil quality between final drives and main transmission tells me that those modifications have not been done.

The same fluid (MS 1209 spec) is used in everything back there. final drives, trans, differential, hydraulic system.

There is one more drain plug on the PTO. If you have the early style hitch with two separate castings you can get at the plug. If you have a later tractor the hitch support casting was made in one piece and you can't get at the plug. That area holds about a quart of oil so it isn't a big problem if it doesn't get drained. It can be a problem if you system has so much water in it that it has separated out. In that case there may be a cup or two of water in there.

If the rear frame has been updated with holes to allow the oil to get to the axle housings the fill/check plug heads are to cut off to indicate the change. On newer tractors those plugs were eliminated.

Last fall when I changed my fluid the main body took 17+ another 5 because it will take it without a problem. Each axle took 6 quarts. The fluid I use is IH Hi-trans for the whole tractor less the engine. Be sure to change the filter on the side and clean the screen or you'll wind up with milk again.
