I have been looking at a Ford 641 priced at $3,000 plus at that price it comes with a brush hog. My question is regarding a front end loader with this tractor. I'm not sure if the tractor has power steering. If it doesn't how much would a p/s kit cost and could I put an aftermarket loader on the tractor with a p/s kit already installed? Also, I dont plan on using the loader very much where I would be lifting a lot of weight. Is power steering a necessity with this tractor to handle the front end loader or would I be able to get by without power steering??? I know the newer tractors have better features to support a FEL but I can't justify spending 10k-15k on a tractor that I probably am going to be just playing around with. Thanks for any input!!!

I've had 'em both ways- an empty loader on an 8N, anyhow, doesn't cause it to steer that hard, so I assume a 641 would be about the same. If you're going to do much manure or dirt work, especially in close quarters, though, you really need the power streering, unless you're Mr. America. But for occasional use, you can deal with it OK. Especially if you plan ahead so you can back straight out with the loaded bucket, then turn when you are underway, rather than turning from a dead stop.

(quoted from post at 23:01:23 03/23/12) My '59 641 has factory PS and a Superior loader. Works good. I wouldn't want it to not have PS.

Bernie, any chance you got some pics of your 641 with the loader?

I heard that these tractors don't have a very strong front end and that this could stress the front pretty hard.

I also heard that a 5 speed is much better to work a loader with.

That's what I heard, I don't have a loader on mine but I'm interested in what you find out about it.

I was reading on an aftermarket p/s kit website that you can't put a FEL on the tractor if you purchase the p/s kit. Is this true??

Add on power steering kit say things like not for use with a loader but that is to cover them if the unit does not work well. As for needed one yep unless your built like the hulk. As for any tractor shop around and you may find one for a better price with what you want. I payed $3250 for an 841 years ago with a loader and a 2 bottom plow and still have that tractor

Power steering is nice when using a loader, but I have got by for years using my 641D without power steering. It is hard to get it to turn with much weight in the bucket if the tractor is not moving, but much easier if the tractor is going forwards or backwards. It could be difficult in tight quarters, but if you plan ahead a little, it is possible to avoid such situations.

I thought about adding the aftermarket power steering to the 641D, but if I remember right, it would have cost more than I paid for the tractor.

Having a loader makes the tractor handy for all sorts of jobs. I have used mine for scaffolding, carrying stuff around, pushing rocks that would be too heavy to lift, fire fighting and all sorts of other things. If the tractor you are looking at does not have a loader now, unless you have a loader already located, I would look elsewhere. It isn"t totally easy to find a loader that will work right and to install it. Much better to have something that already works. Good luck!

years ago i helped my godfather rig a power steering unit off a early '60's Ranchero onto a NAA...worked alot better than the old ARMSTRONG steering...had a full hydraulic loader on it too.
