jd 4050 lights

I have JD 4050 that I have light problems with.
With the switch in the field position all lights work properly for a few minutes and then the outside fender lights and rear cab lights go out, along with the interior light.
In the highway position all lights go out except flashers.
I have replaced breakers.
I have unhooked all lights in one sequence or another.Any suggestjions?

Take the cowling off in front of the dash. Looking at the LH side in front of dash you'll see a breaker/relay board. Check to see all connections are tight.

txjm is right, we had a 4650 that did that and one of the breakers was bad. We switched it out and after working good for a while they still went out. I think we replaced the switch and dimmer switch and still no luck. You could smell the wires heating up in the cab and if possible we'd shut the lights off for a few minutes and then they would work for a while. We knew we had a short and knew it was the black wire leading to the breaker box but hardly ran the thing after dark so didn't fix it. You may check the wires from the switch and around the breaker box to see what one it is if you still have troubles.

Use a test light to determine what is happening when the lights don't work. Start at the circuit breakers. If there is still power on the load side check the light switch. There may be poor connections and/or bad terminals on the switch. If the circuit breakers are tripping there is excessive current draw somewhere in the system.

IIRC there are also relays(parts keys #21 &22) uder the steering column that supply lighting.

(quoted from post at 10:15:08 03/24/12) On my 4455, it was the circuit board in the dash that was giving similar problems.....$975

I'm not stating that your statement is incorrect. I'm curious of the board part # of the replaced part and if a dealer repaired your 4455. I find it difficult to believe that it requires a $975 printed circuit board to make head lamps burn on a tractor such as my 4255 that will run without the computer and even with the battery & alternator disconnected. As far as I know the computer on my 4255 monitors oil pressure,engine/hyd temp and keeps track of engine hrs and service intervals but doesn't control head lamps.

I would bet that the light switch is bad if you don't have a breaker tripping. They get hot and lose contact inside.

The 50 series does not use a circuit board on the lights. The 55 series did.

Do you know the part # of the circuit board? Would the part # be RE50984? I'd like to know so if the lights on my 4255 quite I'd know where to look for it.Thanks,Jim

TX Jim the light switch has one made in the back of it. The high priced circuit board is the one that is in the dash. It would not effect the lights at all. It just controlled the gauges and digital readouts. I think someone sold some unneeded high priced parts.

That's what I thought and why I posted this statement in an earlier post (I'm not stating that your statement is incorrect. Thanks,
The circuit board has been replace recently for another problem, but the lights were giving trouble before that

Thanks,
I wondered about these relays.I have checked the connections on them.I guess I could replace them one at a time.
Could it possible be the dimmer switch or the light switch?
I guess it's just a guessing game at this point

Yes it could be the light switch or dimmer switch The dimmer switch changes the frt & rear lights from field to highway mode(vice-verse). If the $975 circuit board was keeping my headlights from operating I'd wire around the board on my 4255

All lights work momentarily then one breaker opens up.I've tried unhooking lights one at a time but some result.only lights that work all time are rear fender and inside front fender.Nothing in Highway position after about 10 seconds.
Takes about 1 minute in farm position for upper rear and outside front fender.I have determined that there are 3 breakers involved but only one opening up.I have replaced it.
Not sure about the relays,If one of those might be bad. They don't heat up or anything.Been working on it off and on for a while. No big deal but I'm the kind of person that likes to find out what's wrong.Plus I do need lights from time to time

Did you check to be sure all circuit breaker are tight to the board? If a little loose heat from bad connection will cause them to trip. I try replacing circuit breaker before any other parts replacement.

Thanks,
I have checked all that and replaced the breakers.
The breaker that keeps tripping is a 20 amp.Someone had a 30 amp in it when I started working on it,but the book calls for 20.
