Plowing (pics)

Did some plowing today. I thought I did an alright job. I was plowing about 9 inches deep. I'd like to thank everyone on here who helped me over the past year with getting the parts and adjusting the hitch. I also got the right back wheel scooted in for plowing so now I have my drawbar in the middle. I got the plow painted this winter too. The ole 60 will handle the plow in 3rd gear good. The plow is still pulling at a slight angle, but I still have the old landsides on. John Deere is supposed to have new ones in tomorrow after school.

Looks like you did a fine job. Nothing like the smell of fresh turned earth to make a man feel like spring.

With that style hitch, can you adjust the hitch to the left instead of moving the tire?

The hitch on my IH is similar, looks like it is adjustable in 1 inch increments. I have never really messed with it since I usually plow with my 3 pt plow.

Yep, I moved the crossbar over before I scooted the wheel in, but now I can move the crossbar back over where it was.

Looks good aaron. Get those landsides on and see if it trues up some. Wheel is set about right. You may have to adjust the plow hitch. If you have a book it will do a good job of explaining setting the line of draft. Turning under rye?

No, wheat. We had quite a bit of wheat left in the drill last fall so dad told me to sow what was left here. We just figured it would be some good organic matter and fun to plow under as well. Yeah, I about have the book for it memorized. Lol

Since you asked.

1. Your lowering your soils organic matter

2. Rate of water infiltration is much slower

3. Wind and/or water erosion more likely

4. Carbon holding capacity of the soil is lower

The plow looks like3 it's running pretty straight to the direction of travel, so just changing either the horizontal adjustment of the plow hitch or the tractor drawbar(depending on the line of draft) should correct the problem. The plow is doing a good job of covering, but I'd let that wheat grow a little before turning it under.

Well people have plowed for years so why not now. How's it lowering my organic matter level? I'm turnin the wheat and trash under so it will break down into organic matter.

Been hitting the No-till Kool-Aid pretty hard have we???

And more disadvantages

Takes time
Costs money (fuel, equipment, maintenance)
Increases erosion
Reduces organic matter content
Destroys soil tilth
Promotes soil crusting
Increases runoff
Increases evaporation losses
Reduces biological activity (e.g., earthworms)
Brings rocks to surface

" A closed mind is not only closed to outside thoughts, it is often closed to itself as well. It is closed to new thoughts and anything that threatens the status quo. But if you can open the doors, maybe just a crack at first, the ideas that have been patiently waiting at your gates will flood in"

Not closed minded at all. I use many methods myself, including No-Till and moldboard plowing. There is a time and place for both methods. Perhaps you should reflect on your own initial post.
