I have a chance to buy a bred pony today for 100.00 .I know nothing about ponies/horses and have never owned one or had the desires but my daughter never stops talking about one. We have cattle and I would let it run with the cows. Any tips or pointers about buying or owning a pony? What are colts going for??

If all you do is let it run with the cows yep nothing more then another cow but if you want to ride and work it then it does in fact cost more. Saddles are not cheap and then you need to brush it before you put the saddle one etc etc etc and it adds up fast. I know I have 2 horses and a pony but I like to have them because of the garden and the fact the manure is real good for that

You Really don't want a colt for your little girl
they look quit and fuzzy and playful but can be a
horror picture you don't want.
100.00 for a kid broke pony is very cheap ask around with some horse people you trust and get their opinion. It maybe cheap but ERs are higher!

If she is bred, find out if this is first baby.
First babies can be difficult to deliver...just like cattle.
We ran a pony with the cows for years no problem. While the baby is nursing she will need a little grain, after that most ponies stay fat on air.

How big is she? Some people call mini's a ponies, while others call anything under 14HH a pony. Makes a big difference.

Yep, just like another cow. Horses generally don't have as much trouble foaling as cows do- in fact, we probably had "hatched" 30 or so foals before we ever even saw one born.

How big is the pony? What is she bred to? You want the stud to be about the same size, or it could be a problem.

What's the colt worth? Nothing. You'll be lucky to give it away.

usually a reason for a deal like that...... In your place, I think I'd pass and find your girl a nice gelding. No headaches, no baby to get attached to, no moody mare when she's in heat, etc..... The baby in this one's belly is prolly an oops... Maybe a big horse named oops and they are saddling you with the expenses of a vet when you figure out that golf ball won't fit thru the garden hose...... Go in to it with both eyes open... Who's gonna take care of the hooves, etc??

Horses don't have 2 stomachs like cows do. They tend to colic and founder on the things cows eat. Range cubes, alfalfa, high protein licks, etc. can cause a horse to die a painful and miserable death. I wouldn't keep one with the cows while feeding them cow feeds, minerals, protein liquids, etc. The horses also tend to chase, bite, and kick cows. The cows will probably burn lots of calories trying to get away from the horse. Vet bills treating injuries to cow and horse might be very expensive.

True horses have the most sensitive digestive system of any animal on Earth.

False: cows have four(4) stomachs and are called ruminants.

Ive had horses and ponies over the years.Ive had a horse and ponies in with cattle with no problems.I have seen a cow ram a horse broad side. The last pony I had would bite the cattle if they bothered her.My grand daughter has been into horses for a long time, works part time at a stable.A mare with foal can be very protective.
