Super A Farmall Dies

I was grading with my 1950 Farmall Super A and it had been running for about 20 min, working fine, when I started to the barn and it began cutting out or missing. Wouldnt even pull itself u a small incline. Then it died. Did this last fall with a mower but started up after sitting for about 20 min. Am going to see if that helps now, but need some ideas as to what is the problem. IT starts in a heartbeat all the time and the gas is fresh. Any ideas will be appreciated. I will check later today to see if there are any replies. Thanks to all in advance.

Does your Farmall have a Magneto? if so, the problem may be there, Have it gone over, I have read about this problem elsewhere and repairing the magneto seemed to fix the problem, If your Farmall is electronic ignition, check the cap and rotor, cap may be cracked and rotor may be bad, a tune up would help also.

I've had a similar problem, the magneto got warm and water that was in the bottom condensed on the cover and shorted the coil. I dried it out and it was fine. You may want to make sure all the mag gaskets are intact and keep the mag covered so it doesn't get wet.

With what little info you gave hard to be sure. 6 or 12 volts??? Mag or distributor??? When it dies does it have a good spark that is blue/white and will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more??? If it has a distributor is the coil to hot to touch?? If you pull the carb drain plug will gas flow for a few minutes?? Catch it also to look for water and dirt etc in it.

Update: It does have a mag, but I gave it about 20 min, restarted it and it will run fine if I leave about 1/3 choke open. WIll look at other ideas listed. Thanks so much for the things to look for. It runs great otherwise and I cant believe the amount of work it will do for its size. My grandfather farmed with an A and H and now I think I understand a bit better

Runs if choked can be 1 of 2 problems. Weak spark or a fuel problem. Check the spark like I said and also if it has the non-adjustable main jet pull the plug and make sure you have a good flow of gas there. If the main on them clog a bit that can be a problem like your having

I don't have a Farmall , but had a similar experience , No 1, points ,plugs clopgged carb , and retune carb , adjust idle mixture and fuel inlet valve/screw.

If it will run for 20 min the problem isnt gas your coil is probably the culprit unlikely the condenser but thats the way a bad coil in the mag will act. Ive had many with mags over the yrs and only had one that acted like that and it was the coil. You mite get a hair dryer and when its cold start it and then use the hairdryer quick and after a short time it dies youve found the problem

Running for a long time with the choke partially on means it is getting fuel adequately to the carb. The carb is partially plugged in the main jet. Probably not tough to fix with spray can and a tiny wire. Jim

When the engine quits check for fire to your plugs asap before anything cools. If you still have fire to your plugs you probably have a fuel problem. Disconnect the gas line at the carb and see if there's full stream of gas from the tank. If that looks ok, remove the tube fitting
and look for a screen behind the tube fitting that may be clogged. Hal

I believe I'd pull the fuel line & check for good stream of fuel. I've had the inlet to the sediment bowl that screws into the tank get filled with crud, dirt and even a bug one time. Kinda seems to me like too many times the first thing people want to do is adjust the carb. I usually check other things before that, if it was running good before & this started all of a sudden, appears to me that the adjustment should be OK. Just my thoughts, Keith

My uncles A would run under load for about 30 minutes, then would restart after 10, would go on all day like that.

His was the sediment bowl not letting good flow thru. The last 2 years he used it we had fixed it- then finally the steering wore out.

Hope to get it next year if my cousin doesnt repair it.

Let me guess. Inline gas filter instead of just the sediment bowl that it's supposed to have? Throw the filter away and splice the line back together and see what happens.

I would wager you have to take the carb apart, something is plugging up if you need the choke on part way. But that shouldn't matter much after it warms up.
