TO30 Clutch Noise

I have a '52 Ferguson TO30 and recently I have noticed a "rushing" sound, a slight vibration or humming sensation, and a very faint knocking / ticking sound that starts when I push in the clutch pedal. When I release the clutch it stops completely. This is NOT intermittent; it happens every time I push in and release the clutch pedal. I have read other posts that have suggested that this might be a problem with one or more bearings. Any thoughts? - Mike

Watch the crankshaft pulley when you engage/disengage the clutch. Does the pulley move fore and aft? If so, your fibre thrust washer on the crankshaft has disintegrated. It is laying in the bottom of the oil pan.

We drove ours for several years with this condition. Not saying it is ok, finally gave up on the beast with very low oil pressure leading to a bearing knock.

Possibly bad throw out bearing. The release bearing is a thrust bearing with a set of balls inside separated by a steel cage, like you see in regular ball bearings. If that cage starts to disintegrate the balls will bunch up inside and make clicking noise as they roll around against each other. Would also cause vibration that would go away when the thrust load is taken away, such as releasing the pedal. I imagine if that"s the problem it will generate some excessive heat that may be detectable through an inspection hole.
