O.T. Mild Weather

This has been the mildest winter I can recall in awhile, '09 was colder, low on snow accumulation, '10-'11 classic long winter with lots of snow, and consistent cold temperatures from recent memory.

Yesterday, biting insects were out, be it gnats, or whatever the various small black insects actually are, surprisingly, I got nailed several times by mosquitoes, which is just a bit early. Funny, bites don't itch can't recall where I got hit, but they were zeroing in on me in the afternoon, usually its after dark if not a wet season.

Soil temps on my hill here are probably fine to plant now, though that frost could get you if things cooled off.

So last year we got hammered by winter, this year complete opposite, so does that mean next winter will be harsh LOL (based on the pattern).

I won't even get into global warning, the way I see it you get what you get when you get it.

See the link below, I've always thought Bob was straight forward, I like his last sentence in the interview, wish they all looked at it like that !

Not only you, Billy. Here in Kansas was in the 80's yesterday, supposed to be in high 80's today and warm all week with little chance of moisture (we are getting dry).
Weather comes and goes in cycles. Winters in Kansas can vary from extremely bad to extremely mild, like this year. Very little snow and only really cold weather was a few days in January, and it never did get below zero that I recall.
Just hoping for some rain.
We were extremely dry last summer.

Yep been a hot dry years so far. Yesterday is was in the mid 70s and they are calling for the high 70s maybe 80 today here in misery or as you know it Missouri. We are also almost 3 inches behind on rain/snow so it is way to dry and if it stays this way we will be in trouble big time and peope thought hay was high last year if it stays dry hay will cost a guy big time

Saved alot on the firewood, and I'm starting on next couple winters supply! I just don't like the mud! Lol.. J

Same here, as the sun heats this house during the day, its well insulated, man windows facing south etc. I use the stove in the basement/garage, mostly in the afternoon, evening if I'm not here, for obvious reasons and I can get that to 70 deg in 15 minutes, will rise to 80 and above if I want, mostly when real cold and I want the heat to help upstairs keep that furnace off. I round of logs maybe an extra or 2 and thats it. I have next years 1/2 bucked, other in logs, and have a old section of hedgerow to clean with oak, maple and black cherry down already, will be dragging those up soon, it is nice to stay ahead on the wood !

You could moldboard plow or work in most fields right now, this dry this early kind of concerns me, frost is gone, no mud season here at all, well there was briefly, everything is 4-5 weeks ahead, still plenty of time for a blizzard too, but don't seem likely. I can see weeds popping up in the garden patch adjacent to the house !

I looked at the map yesterday, the temps in other places and where you are sure seem a bit warm !

Mud season is in full swing here in W PA, though I did squeeze in one day of plowing this week before it rained again. If the weather man is right, we could have a nice 10 days lined up. It would be nice to get all the plowing done.

Lack of rain does not seem to hurt the fields too much here, but you can lose 2nd cut, usually its too much, hopefully you get some needed rain, when you need it!

2010 was really hot and dry here, milkweed actually wilted and no seed pods, sloped fields like my house looked like something you would need to combine, it was late summer before I could start mowing with the rotary, the dust and chaff was unreal, moldboard plow I used on my plots turned up talc like topsoil, thankfully it rained soon after. We usually don't go that long, but sometimes, and enough to cause crops like corn to wilt, they were done combining in late Sept. which is unheard of, they got an early start, spring was mild and dry that year.

As of now , it is 84* ,20% humd. Temp. is going up , humd is dropping. I started to record snow and rain fall on Jan.I this yr . Snow fall was 2, 1" snows. It has rained 7 times , totaling 5 1/2". We are about 6-8" short so far.
Ok.City weather said that we have had the 9th warmest winter on record so far.
The wild fire danger is very serious with all of the high winds and low humd. Had a wild fire start along I 44 last week , 52 MPH winds , dry . It got within about 1/2 mile from us . I was pretty worried too. This country is all underbrush, trees, grass & weeds. Not much ground plowed to slow a fire. We are in central Ok.now. Top notch neghibor tho.
