What is you guys opinion of the International DV-550 v8 diesel in their trucks? Any information would be appreciated. I havent heard the best things about them. Thanks

I have a 71 loadstar with the 550 in it my dad has run for about thirty years now, not everyday of course, and have had no real problems with it. It has pretty good power and sounds awesome with a straight pipe on it.

Fairly tough unit in its power/use class. Based on the V 549 gasser. Don't know whether or not they were all set up like this, but the ones i am familiar with idled on 4 cyl, the other 4 cyl kicked in above idle speed.
Was replaced by the 9 liter somewhere around 1980,+/- a year or two.

That was a gas engine before it was a diesel and I'd stay away from it. I had two trucks with that engine, we had to rebuild one and I believe it still had the gas cam in it.

Back in the late 70's I had a International 1700 implement truck with the DV550 in it. When you first cranked it, it would smoke like a DDT application truck, but after it warmed up it ran clean and was an excellent running and pulling truck which never gave any trouble for the several years I ownded it.

The state of Missouri had several and not good luck. Had to put bearings in at 80,000 and no power. Most were sold at 100,000 with motor out. I would stay away!
