The AC/Heat control knob will only shut off or defrost. I know its vacuum operated not electrical. The vacuum pump makes a lot of noise and if I plug the suction end of the pump with my finger, it will kill the pump motor.

My question is does anyone know if the pump should kill that easy.? How much measured suction should there be on the suction side of the pump?

I had the same problem on myf250, it defaults to defrost, it's a problem with the pump I think it was, does your 4wd drive work by the knob, with the vacume? I just plugged the 4wd side and my AC worked again. I have manual lock hubs so I dont need the vacume, if I remember the pump builds pressure and stores it in the reserve tank. You may also have a vacume leak somewhere.

Had the same problem on mine and have seen it a bunch of times. 90% of the time it is the vacuun hoses that are in the wheel well. It is clamped to the brake line, starts at the frame and goes to the top of the spindle. You will need about 5 - 6 foot of 1/4 hose and you can get it at Advanced , Autozone, or Oreilys. Just pull off the hose, plug the end with a bolt or nail, put a blow gun on it, emerse in water and pressurize it and you will seee the leaks.

The 4wd and the louvers for you AC for dash work off the dame vac pump, when there is a problem, such as a bad pump, or loss of vac the 4wd may not lock, and the vent defaults to defrost. These things are mounted on the passenger side inner fender on my 2000. Good luck ,
