IH 1086 POWER STEERING HAND PUMP

The top seal on the powersteering hand pump on my 1086 was leaking badly so I went to my local IH dealer today and bought a new seal kit. After installing the kit the leak has stopped but now the steering wheel turns a lot harder than it used to. Is this normal? Also is it necessary to bleed the system now or will it take care of itself? Thanks for any input!

You over tighten the bolts that hold it together.

Loosen them about a 1/2 of round and hopefully it will not leak after smashing the gaskets.

I could be wrong on this but I have been there done that on the over tighten.

Oh, by the way, when you find out what it is, post back to let us know about it. We can all learn something. Jim

When you install the lower sleeve and cap then tighten all those bolts very evenly, all while turning the shaft to keep everything lined up, there is a torque spec cast into the cap

If you followed the torque spec you will have to bleed the system it. Might self bleed but I have never been that lucky.

I took the pump back out and looked at that rubber thing and it seemed ok. Put it all back together and its still seems stiff. When I installed the new bushing with the kit I did have to tap it pretty hard to make it slide down the shaft into position. Maybe its just a little tight on there? All I know is that a new one is $1050.00. So I think I'll have to get used to it and hope it loosens up a little over time. Thanks for everyones help!

Sounds like you only replaced the upper seal on the input shaft. The kit usually comes with pretty good instructions and there is really no reason for it to turn harder than before as you don't have to take any bolts out, unless you forced the seal and ring into place. One other thing, how did you take the pin out of shaft. It needs to be supported really well to not damage anything. All the other hints seem to be referring to the lower seal on bottom end which is a whole different situation. Maybe I am reading you wrong though.
