My 1957 ford 800 will only lift as high to where the lower lift arms are straight out and level with the tractor. the oil has been changed and at the proper level.

oes that statement apply to both the situation where you are in DRAFT mode AND in Position Control mode? If not, in which?

Chances are your cam follower pin is worn and should be replaced. This involves pulling the lift cover and usually it's a good idea to install a rebuild kit (O-rings and seals) while you have it apart. After this the lift should be adjusted per the Ford Service manual or the I&T manual if you don't have the special Ford gauging tools. This stuff has been discussed over and over again in the Ford section you might want to search and look at previous threads there.

With the lever in the horizontal position, pointing to the front of the tractor the lift will not raise all the way up. but if you push the lever all the way down it will raise all the way up.and when you release the handle the lift returns to the half way position.

es, sounds like linkage problem, part of which will be a worn cam follower pin.

Thanks for the info look forword to fixing that problem. I do have one other problem if i may trouble you with it. My tractor pops out of 1st gear when i bush hog and it really pops out when plowing. i have to hold it gear with a bungee cord. it only pops out in 1st gear.
I had someone tell me that it might be a weak spring in the shifter.

Could" be a detent spring, but a lot more likely wear on coupler or gear that it mates with (1st) or worn bearings which allow sloppy alignment.
