O/T husky chainsaw carb adjust

just bought a husky 440 last fall, am still trying to get it to run right. this is a calif. compliant saw. i am at just under three thousand feet elevation. been back three times for carb adjust, they cannot get it right cause they are at lower altitudes than i am. the problem is they removed the slot from the carb adjusting screws and replaced the slot with splines around the perimeter of the head of the needle. they also made sure there was not enough clearance to get any other type tool in there. the shops are forbidden to sell the tool that fits the head. only other fix i can think of is disassemble the saw and use a dremel to cut a slot in the head of the needle. checked my weed wacker and pole saw, darned if they are not the same way. any suggestions other than moving out of california would be appreciated.

Well you've about covered the problem. At Service Schools I have been at, I have been told that EPA can fine a dealer $37,500 if they catch someone selling that tool to the general public, among other infractions.

They are on Ebay all the time.

I would almost be willing to gamble that the a$$holes that passed those laws have never touched a chain saw or any other piece of lawn equipment.

I think my friend had the same problem, if remember right he said he bought the special tool to adjust it on eBay. I would check on there, or google that question about the tool to adjust it. You may come up with something, good luck

You can remove the air filter and (usually) use a Dremel Tool with a small cut-off wheel to cut a slot in each screw..
I have had to do it several times..

Now..someone tell me just how to LEAN out a small lawn mower (New last summer) that is running TOO RICH..??
NO adjustment screws at all..!!
It is not the air filter causing it..it fouls the plug regularly and shows Black smoke..hardly runs up to mowing RPM..!!

How about travelling out of California the next time you go saw shopping?

What ever the powers that be come up with someone else will come out with a work around. I really wonder how much pollution a weed eater is going to put out??? How about chainsaws?? They are used very few hours each year. Just regulation gone wild.

Here is a link to Ebay that has the tool you need. The tool with freight is about $10.

Also below is a link to a four piece set that is about $32 that has the four different common tamper proof tools. I just went ahead and bought the four piece set several years ago. I use it all of the time.

Carb adjusting tool.

I have no information about the Jets in the Carb..

They do seem to be very lean, from the factory.

Once they get a year or two of use, the fuel lines rot off and they get so they cannot even be started..

I took a blue insulated wire butt spice and heated it up on one end and squized the plastic tube shut with a pair of pliers so it fits a small flat screw driver, then I heated the other end and pushed it on the air screws and held it there until it cooled and stuck to the screw, Then use a small flat blade to adjust as needed

Simple fix. Just take it back and tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine. If the stores get enough of them back they will lean on somebody to get the reg changed. Problem solved. If didn't take long around here before they gave the tool with the saw.

Hard to believe that any number of chain saws and weed whackers can amount to a hill of beans when youi drive by a coal-fired power plant, or see a harbor of ships that blow tubes at night.

I have heard that you can take a piece of 1/4 steel brake line and flatten the end just a little and it will work. I bought a Jonsered and haven't had a problem with needing adjustment.

i knew if i posted this problem there would be some bright people out there who could help me with it. thanks alot guys, as to buying a saw out of state, they check your zip code and make sure you get a carb compliant unit if used in calif. dealers can get a big fine if selling non compliant units to calif or other states like it.
bought a log splitter from IMS back east and the engine has a carbon cannister connected to the fuel tank, a pre muffler on the exhaust etc. etc.
thanks again, now at least i have several ideas to try.

Couldn't get stuff to run correctly so I bought the tool and used it on both Poulan saws and a Husky weedwacker. Problem solved.
