The guys wife came back over yesterday afternoon. She wrote a check for the trade difference I wanted. She told me to get the "money pit" down the road. She usually is a real quite lady but it seems her husband was still thinking of fixing the problem tractor. I guess she laid down the law to him. LOL He showed up after work (looking kind of sheepish)and drove the JD 4450 home. He called back late last night and told me that even he could tell that this one was a much better tractor than what he bought.

So the JD 4440 is on a trailer heading to Fort Atkinson this afternoon. Son had to go get a load of hay up in MN. So he is dropping the tractor off at the bone yard. I did not put anything back together so it is in several pieces. I really want to make sure this thing stayed "dead".

I did keep the rear tires and rims. So I now have a set of good 20.8 x 38 radial tires. Now I have to decide which tractor gets the better tires. I have two that are getting low on tread but with a new 20.8 x 38 being $1000 plus each, I have just been running them.

Now someone will find it at the boneyard and get all excited. Wow! Restoration project! Just needs a little work and some tires! Wonder what my wife would think?

How much are they getting for it? I love too buy salvage tractors.I fix them up all the time.I think almost all my equipment I use was bought salvage.

After following the story, I never realized that much could be wrong with one like a 4440, was it an owner like your good paying customer who runs it till it breaks down, like in the manure lagoon LOL !

My farmer friend still has one of those 4440's, I've run it with duals and a heavy JD disc, disc mower in hay, and pulled a big ole gravity wagon with it, motor was completely rebuilt, even before hand, just prior to the motor rebuild, seems like a reliable model, he's had it for as long as I can recall, has the same transmission, something I've never run prior to, kind of like a power shift hybrid I thought, had to make sure to understand how to shift that one, here it is on the 637 Disc:

I already had a call from a guy that saw my son hauling it. He wanted to know what we wanted for the tractor. I told him it was a parts tractor only with a lot of problems. He said " It looks to good to be all that bad of a tractor". I guess that shiny paint is all it takes to make a good tractor. LMAO
