Hey folks,
I'm cleaning out and rearranging the feed room and have about 300 pounds of oats that I'm not sure about. These were given to me when I bought some straw and barley. It's the stuff that fell thru the screens on the combine. Anyway, went to roll some the other day and it didn't do just right and eventually plugged up the press... Was gonna just give it to a neighbor with chickens and one with goats, but I notice a smell to it that is kinda musty or moldy... Will this stuff hurt animals or are they smart enough to leave it alone? Or If I put it out where wild hogs and deer can get it, will it hurt them?

Thanks, Dave

(quoted from post at 06:45:09 02/27/12) give it to the chiken neihbors,,it mite help makefriends, mite bother horses diestive tract

Don't think it would hurt the chickens??? Last thing I want is them to feed the stuff and the birds kick off....

Seriously? Have you ever seen some of the stuff chickens eat? Musty oats aren't going to touch a chicken unless they're laced with rat poison, and even then it'd probably just worm the chickens!

I've got about 40 bushel of "old oats" that I
brought home last spring. It has a little bit of
everything in there - dirt, wood splinters from the
barn it was in, walnut hulls, etc, etc. Stuff is
probably 4-5 years old - maybe older. My chickens
LOVE the stuff! They pick through and eat the good
stuff, and leave the bad.
I give it to them with a little "fresh" grains mixed
in. They thrive on it, and it was WAY cheaper then
buying all "new" stuff.

I think you will give the horses a stomach ache, give it to the chickens. don't skimp to save 1 dollar when it could cost you 2.
