I have a 1970 Ford 4500 backhoe- similar thing. My understanding is that the PS pump is mounted on the engine, and if the gasket fails, the oil leaks into the oil pan. Arabs hate you.........you are generating engine oil, reducing oil profits needed to feed their starving families! Shame on you, Infidel! Reform your ways, replace the gasket, take your savings to send them a pork sammich!

(quoted from post at 01:34:15 02/26/12) My 1970s Ford 3600 leaks powersteering fluid into the oil pan. Anyone have any idea's why?

I think he means the PS.pump shaft seal is leaking.
The pump is mounted on the front left side of the engine.
Pull it off and replace the shaft seal.

As others have said, its typically a seal failure. What Ive found is that usually the shaft is worn just enough also so that the new seal wont address the problem.

Just put a new seal in my 4600's p/s pump last winter. Somewhere around 8300 hours at that point. What I've found is that the shaft it usually OK, -IF- the pump hasn't been run dry. If the shaft is worn, you're pretty much stuck buying a new pump.

Oil is passing the seal on the PS pump shaft. It might be a bad seal. It's more likely a worn out pump...
Take the pump apart and inspect it paying particular attention to the shaft bushings and housings. If those are worn, get a new pump. If they're not worn (too) badly then you can reseal the pump and probably have some success with it.
Seal kits are somewhere in the vicinity of 60 bucks.
