woo hoo!!! got another tractor here, technically it belongs to my friend. he's somewhat new to the old tractor thing. what he got is a late 50's farmall cub. we were told it has been converted to 12 volt electrical syst. the cub still has original looking generator but appears to be repainted black. is there any way of looking at it and telling if it really is? im tending to believe the previous owner on this. ?2 if this is the case will it still be positive ground? oh and also it has coil ignition rathr than a magneto thanks a bunch for any kind of help

If the serial number plate is red, it is a 12v (or was originally) if it is black, it is (or was) 6v. The 6 v can be remanufactured into a 12 volt rather easily, so no telling without checking the output.
If it has a 12v regulator, and puts out 14.2 to 14.6 volts, it is fine. If it barely puts out 13 volts it is probably a 6 volt being worked hard. (not the best). Jim

Probably the best way to figgure out if it is positive or negative ground is to see how the battery is connected. If not that check to see how the coil is connected (positive, negative terminals... A generator can be either, depending on how it is flashed, when installed (reinstalled). A six volt generator can be forced to produce 12volts, weakly by replacing regulator with a 12volt regulator, or by twiddling the controls on the 6 volt unit, to the top of it"s range - (may not be true 12 volts) If unit is running, you could probably put a volt meter on the battery... I would assume there"s no battery, if you"re asking these questions.

thanks guys for the help threre was no battery in the tractor so the easiest way to tell was gone im gonna have to look closer to see if it is a 12v regulator or what the real story is thanks again

Adam, if the battery cales are still attached to the tractor, the larger opening one should be the Positive. Hold them side by side to tell.
