Oil Pressure.............

I'm concerned about the oil pressure on my H Farmall.

On a cold start with 15W40 oil it will hit about 50 pounds pressure, but when completely warmed up will run only 5-10 pounds at full throttle. I've replaced the guage and the oil pump, so I guess the next thing is to replace the rod and main bearing inserts.

Other than that, it runs like a champ, good compression, no smoke, etc. For that reason, I hate to go into it farther than I have to.

What are the odds that replacing the rod and main bearings will help? The tractor is a 1952, been in our family 50 years, and to my knowledge the engine has never been torn down.

If it has never has bearings, which seems not likely, I am sure they have a lot of extra clearance. Also, the cam bushings. But one thing I would look at is the bolt holding the oil filter. It should have a small metering hole in the bolt and if someone put the wrong bolt or messed with it , that sure will dump a lot of oil to sump.

It is more likely the cam bearings. The rod&mains will help some but, to solve the problem cam bearings . Since you replaced the oil pump you know the gasket is not bad on the cover of the pump.

'Bout 98 to 1.

Rule of thumb is that ya replace the inserts every 5,000 hours because they wear.

Cam bearings, not so much.

My 1950 H had similar pressures. I put in Valvoline 20W-50, and I have 75 psi on startup, 50 psi warm, and down to 30 psi to 40 psi hot. Not saying it is the correct thing to do, but it seemed to help.

My C has run like that since I bought it used 30 years ago. My buddy who was an engineer for Cummins for 35 years says that on a low rpm engine like that any oil pressure is enough. Unless you have run out of projects (which I doubt) I"d just run it.

Low oil is usuually cause by worn mains and rod bearings, worn pump, or stuck open pressure relief valve. You say you recently replaced the pump so check the pressure relief valve and if it isn"t stuck and IF it has the correct spring, then the bearings are the problem.
